ABRAM J. NEUFELD
Abe married Irene Loewen of Steinbach, MB, in 1946. After graduating from Mennonite Brethren Bible College, and teaching at the Yarrow (BC) Bible School, in 1954 Abe and Irene with their three sons began a quarter century of engagement in mission under Mennonite Brethren missions, most of it in Austria, first in Linz and then Vienna. Starting in 1983, Abe served as pastor at Portage Avenue Church, and part-time at Elmwood Mennonite Brethren. Together he and Irene shared a lifelong dedication to ministry. Abe was an excellent singer, gifted teacher, mentor, preacher, counsellor, administrator, and visionary pioneer in mission.
He is survived by his three sons, Tom (Rebecca), Charles (Bonnie), and Gareth (Kathleen); six grandchildren, (Kristin, Jonathan, Simon, Sara, David, and Miriam) and their spouses (Jerry, Tricia, Judith, Matthew, and Gina), five great-grandchildren, Naomi, Micah, Eliza, Nora, and Adeline; two sisters, Lottie Durksen and Kathie Fast; sisters-in-law, Regina Neufeld and Mary Loewen; and brother-in-law Jake Bergen.
He was predeceased in 2016 by Irene, his wife for 70 years; and by three brothers; Jake, John, and Pete; three sisters, Annie, Mary, and Helene; and much loved brothers- and sisters-in-law.
Visitation will be at Friends Funeral Service on Monday, July 29, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; funeral service Tuesday, July 30, at 11:00 a.m. at Portage Avenue Church. Interment to follow in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Abe's memory to Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church in support of its outreach ministries.

Hello Gareth or should I still be saying Herr Neufeld from MBCI German class days. I have been looking through online obituaries and came across your parents death notices. My heart was warned by wonderful memories of my time as organist at Portage Avenue MB church. The hugs your parents gave were the best and their caring hearts shared times of tears and prayers with me. I especially remember the Portage Avenue church seniors group going on a retreat to the hotel at Hecla Island and the whole group chipped in to pay for my room and meals for 5 days. Your father was the retreat leader and he was such a loving teacher and example. I had been invited to come play piano for the music during the retreat...congregational singing and playing in the background while your parents sang lifting our hearts to Heaven. I think we all felt like the disciples on the Mount of Tramnsfiguration. Just let us stay a little longer. I am sure they are both in a quiet corner of Heaven by a babbling brook leading a group of all ages singing Jesus loves me. Thank you for sharing your parents with us. My parents died Heinrich Pauls on Jan. 15, 2013 and mom Justa Pauls 31 days later on Feb. 16, 2013. I miss them terribly but there is a day of Reunion coming without tears. Gareth, I told your parents about how your grade 12 German class 8 of us all piled in your VW Rabbit to the Happy Vineyard for German buffet lunch on more than one occassion. You got your sense of humour from both of them. May God comfort and bless you. Auf Wiedersehen. From Reinhold Heinrich Pauls. I can imagine them singing. "Last die Herzen immer froehlich und mit Dank erfuellet sein.(Let hearts always be joyful and filled with gratitude)." - Posted by: Reinhold Heinrich Pauls (Friend) on: Mar 24, 2021

Our deepest sympathies to you all as you process the loss of your father. I remember fondly your dad’s messages at Elmwood Church. They were foundational in my growing faith as a teen. May you know the right arm of our Lord holding you up and may His word sustain you now and through the coming years. He will be missed. - Posted by: Lori Kliewer Fehr (Fellow member at Elmwood MB Church in the 60’s) on: Jul 31, 2019

Gareth and Kathleen, Nancy wrote me about your father's passing. I’m so sorry to hear that news, I know how much time you spent with him, and you will miss that special connection with him. I read his obituary and I see the legacy he left in you in the caring life you lead. He must have been so proud of you. My thoughts and prayers are with you and all your family. What an amazing man. Uncle Abe blessed my son Dustin and my life with his unconditional love and support throughout the many years. A man of highest integrity who loved and served the Lord his whole life and lead by example. They just don't make men like that anymore. I will miss you Uncle Abe, till we meet again. My condolences to the whole Neufeld Family. Vonne & Dustin Neufeld - Posted by: Vonne & Dustin Neufeld (Niece-in-law) on: Jul 27, 2019

Words cannot make your loss less great but may God comfort you at this time as your mourn your fathers loss yet celebrate a life well lived. We treasured your dad and mom as did our parents, David and Kathleen Klassen & Al & Elsie Neufeld. We are out of town otherwise would have come to the service.
