DR. PETER N. PORRITT
FRCS Eng. FRCS Can.
May 23, 1923 - August 23, 2019

Dr. Peter N. Porritt passed peacefully in Winnipeg on August 23, 2019.
Adored and loved by his family; his wife of 65 years, Mary Porritt; sons, Howard (Helen), Julian (Stephanie), Trevor (Arlene) and Ashley (predeceased); grandchildren, Andrew, Alex, Danielle, Mackenzie, Grayson, Alana, and Christy.
Born in Penzance, England, educated at King's School Canterbury and trained at The London Hospital and the Royal National Orthopedic Hospitals. During the Second World War Peter served in the RAF. In 1958 Peter and his family immigrated to Winnipeg where he continued his medical career. Amongst many accomplishments he served as Chief of Orthopedics at the Grace Hospital and taught medicine at the University of Manitoba.
Peter was an avid cricketer and field hockey enthusiast. He formed the Taverner's Cricket Club and served as President of the Manitoba Cricket Association. He started field hockey in Manitoba. Peter organized field hockey for the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, with his international career spring boarding from there to encompass five Olympic Games and culminating in the 1999 Pan American Games again back in Winnipeg. Peter served as a member of the Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF) for decades. He also served for many years on the International Field Hockey Federation (FIH) and is an honorary lifetime member. In 2000 Peter was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame as a builder.
The last days of Peter's life were spent in the excellent care of the staff at West Park Manor Personal Care Home. They were always kind and respectful. We thank them with our deepest appreciation.
As per his wishes, no service will be held.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Dr. Porritt and I had a lovely working relationship for several years, as I produced his reports and letters. I learned a great deal and was impressed by his commitment and expertise. His lovely Christmas cards were always a highlight of the season. Though I've learned of this quite late, my thoughts and wishes for peace and comfort go out to Mary and his family and friends. - Posted by: Mayne Ellis (work) on: Nov 12, 2020

  • Peter Porritt was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame as a Builder in 2000 alongside his son Trevor who went in as an Athlete the same year. The first inductees from their sport, they were also only the second father/son duo to be inducted in the same year (the Reids went in for water-skiing in 1986). Always a gentleman and quietly proud of his contributions to the sport of field hockey, our condolences to Mary, Peter and family on your loss. - Posted by: Rick Brownlee (MB Sports Hall of Fame) on: Sep 03, 2019

  • So very sorry to hear of Dr. Porritt’s passing and I’m thinking of all the family. I last saw Dr. Porritt, Mary and Trevor at the Women’s Olympic qualifier in Victoria and we were able to catch up on some of the fun days on the pitch at Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg. All the best to the family at this difficult time. - Posted by: Suzzanne Nicholson (Friend ) on: Sep 02, 2019

  • Peter was a true gentleman in field hockey. A stalwart in the PAHF and the FIH. I will miss his beautiful Christmas cards, filled with thoughtful notes and always fronted with amazing personal photographs. My deepest condolences to Mary, the boys, and the entire Porritt family. - Posted by: Alan Waterman (Longtime field hockey friend) on: Sep 02, 2019

  • We were sorry to hear of Dr. Porritt's passing and were pleased to remember Mary's phone call a year or so ago. Peter remembers that it was through Dr. Porritt's connection that Dr. T. Jim Mills, Betty, himself (Peter), Elizabeth and Jocelyn came to Canada in 1959 and were here when his youngest sister Claire was born. He also remembers well that the Porritt family were close neighbours in Charleswood as he was growing up in the Roblin Blvd home. Peter especially, remembers Dr. Porritt as Peter was growing up as a teen in Charleswood. He remembers that Dr. Jim enjoyed his days working at the London Hospital with Dr. Porritt, as well as enjoying a close relationship with him in Winnipeg. We send our best to the Porritt family and all good wishes for their future. - Posted by: Peter and Margaret Mills (Friend) on: Aug 31, 2019

  • Peter was an excellent orthopaedic Surgeon and a superb teacher of the craft. I benifitted greatly from his expertise both as a student, resident and colleague as did many others. It was a pleasure knowing him, working with him and sharing his knowledge both in medicine and sports as well as his lively sense of humour!. Condolances to the family but Peter lives on in all he taught and touched. Merv Letts, Orthopaedic Surgeon - Posted by: R Merv Letts (Student and colleague) on: Aug 31, 2019
