I have fond memories of growing up and seeing my great great aunt Sophie from time to time in family gatherings. I regret I didn't get to see her as much as I should have. I came across this interview done with her back in 2009 about her life growing up in the North End of Winnipeg http://pastforward.winnipeg.ca/digital/collection/voicesofne/id/3/rec/1 which I thought was fascinating. - Posted by: Josh Lemer (Great Great Nephew) on: Sep 10, 2020

It was a pleasure to meet Mrs. Shinewald on her 97th birthday when I walked the Challenge for Life on Saturday, June 12, 2010 in memory of a family friend who had recently passed away from ovarian cancer. I was amazed that she was able to participate in such an adventure, while at the same time I assisted in spreading awareness for cancer research when the Challenge for Life was in it's infancy stages. - Posted by: Benefactor of Hope (Acquaintance) on: Jun 19, 2020

I only knew Sophie in the last few weeks in her life as a volunteer with JCFS. In that short period she regaled me with vignettes from her life in her inimitable entertaining style. It didn’t take me long to realize this was a special lady who lived a fascinating and rewarding life. I was just beginning to tap into her trove of memories which was especially remarkable considering her age. I’ll miss our Monday afternoon chats. - Posted by: Fred (Volunteer and friend) on: Sep 07, 2019

It just happened that I was to be in Winnipeg the day of Auntie Sophie's passing. How wonderful for me that I could pay tribute to my friend. I lived across the street from Auntie Sophie and Uncle Hy. I spent many after school moments at their kitchen table as a elementary school youngster. There was always a treat and plenty of cherished advice. Auntie Sophie was always sewing something and Uncle Hy would quietly beam from the living room as we sat at table and discussed the day's activities. I have been away from Winnipeg for the past 37 years, but was always able to visit when I did come home. Whether it was at Gwen Sector or Rosh Pina or at my own Grandmother's 90th birthday event, Auntie Sophie was always young for her years. She lived a valued life and that is what everyone hopes for. My condolences to the entire family. - Posted by: Robyn Feuerberg (41 Lansdowne neighbour) on: Sep 05, 2019

Sophie was a lovely lady, a good sense of humour, intelligent and very kind. I am a good friend of her daughter Jackie Shaw and Jackie's family. It was wonderful and special to know such a great lady. Sophie will be missed by everyone. She is now with the "Angels". Joan Juskiw - Posted by: Joan Juskiw (friend) on: Sep 04, 2019

I wish to extend my sincere condolences on the death of your mother. I remember meeting her on one of our lunch hours way back in the 1960's - and I also remember she was a very attractive lady. She had a long life which was nice for you both. You are in my thoughts at this sad time. We were "coffee break" friends many years ago while working on the 2nd floor of the Phoenix Building. Today we are somewhat neighbors - you live in Edmonton, I live in Calgary. - Posted by: Sharon Lepine (Jackie's former "coffee friend" ...) on: Sep 04, 2019

I was so saddened to read of the passing of Sophie (Z"L"). She was a shining example of a wonderful woman who inspired many. May her memory be for a blessing! Deepest sympathy to all her family. Esther Weinstein in B.C. - Posted by: esther weinstein (friend) on: Sep 04, 2019
