PAULETTE ELKON
July 9, 1915 - October 8, 2019

Sadly, on Tuesday, October 8, we had to say good-bye to our wonderful mom, grandma, aunt, and friend, Paulette. She was born on July 9, 1915 in Winnipeg's North End, the eldest of the three children of Gregory and Anna Matkosky.
She attended Margaret Scott and Isaac Newton schools. In her youth, Paulette was active in the Ukrainian community. She always had a love of music, singing and was active in choir and orchestra playing the mandolin. She became a hairdresser and for a brief time after her marriage, in 1942, to Nicholas Elkon, ran a home-based business. After the birth of their daughter, Marilynn, she became a stay-at-home mom. She was a great homemaker and a wonderful seamstress who kept her daughter in the most beautiful clothes. She was the most devoted mother any daughter could want. She was not only a mom to me but, also, my best friend through all the good and, sometimes, difficult times. Some of her interests included belonging to a sewing circle, square dancing, enjoying many years as a canasta player with a group of very good friends, as well as being an avid bowler. Later in life she entered the workplace at the Paddlewheel Restaurant at The Bay where she made a whole new group of friends. The greatest joys in her life were her daughter Marilynn and granddaughter Courtney. She was Courtney's first best friend and her third parent. Mom spent many summers visiting her dear sister in Saskatoon and made several trips to Toronto, Detroit, Vancouver and New Brunswick. She also visited San Francisco, London, Hong Kong, China, Singapore and Hawaii. Later, we three travelled to Bermuda, Las Vegas, Alaska, Nice and Barbados.
She was fortunate to have stayed in her own home until her 98th year when she moved to St. James to be closer to her daughter. The last three years she spent at Oakview Place where she enjoyed meeting many new friends, the wonderful recreational activities and, her favourite, the beautiful garden. Our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff who cared for her at Oakview and who are too numerous to name (you know who you are)! Thanks also to our friends, Pat and Marlene who were like second daughters to her.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, her husband Nick, her son-in-law Garry, her daughter's special friend Ralph and her most dear and treasured sister, Julie Homenick. She is survived by her daughter Marilynn (Slobogian), her granddaughter Courtney (Slobogian), and many nieces and nephews
A funeral service will be held at St. Basil's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 202 Harcourt St., Saturday, October 19 at 10:00 a.m. Officiants are Rev. Fr. Ihor Shevd and Fr. Isidore Dziadyk.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory to a charity of choice are welcome.

  • As part of the Recreation/ Leisure and Lifestyle staff, one of my favorite weekly activities was doing Paulette's nails on Friday mornings. Paulette and I reminisced about her love of music, her old house, and her travels. She always liked to ask me questions about what was going on in my life and always made me feel special. I love that I can say Paulette was my friend and I'll miss her dearly. We'll miss seeing you every day as well. Take care. - Posted by: Khristin Wagner (Friend and Staff Member of Oakview Place ) on: Oct 17, 2019
