ALASTAIR HOUSTON

After a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, Alastair passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2019.
He was born in Greenock, Scotland to Robert and Alice Houston on December 19, 1938. Younger brother to John.
Alastair leaves to mourn his wife of 60 years, Isabel; children, David (Lori), Julie (Martin) and Alastair (Barb); grandchildren, Alastair (Brittany), Ceilidh and Paul.
Dad had many great memories of growing up in Scotland which included playing soccer and golf, a sport in which he enjoyed until he was 80 years of age. He was a welder by trade and in his early years was employed at Scott Shipbuilding in Greenock.
In 1967, Mom and Dad, with three young children, decided to start a new life in Winnipeg. Dad came on his own to find work and a place to live. Soon after Mom followed, boarding a plane with us, and the journey began. He soon found a soccer team to join, United Weston. Many of his teammates remained lifelong friends. He was also a long-time member of Bel Acres Golf and Country Club and in 2002, was the Manitoba Senior Open Champ in his class.
Dad was employed at CP Rail and took an early retirement, enjoying every moment of it. Mom and Dad travelled extensively, he loved spending time with his grandkids, tending to his vegetable garden, and spending time at Nutimik Lake with his family.
A special thank you to family and friends who came to visit Dad in his final days. Also, to the Riverview staff for their care and support.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 20, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at Bronx Park Community Centre, 720 Henderson Hwy.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • My condolences to the Houston family. The first time I met Al was on the back 9 at Bel Acres Golf Club. It was getting dark and we joined up at the 17 hole. I was amazed at his golf swing and the power he had. Over the course of several years, I found out that he was a very good golfer in Scotland and he carried on the tradition here. It took me about another 20 years of golf to get as good as he was. Rest in peace. - Posted by: colin dederick (fellow golfer at Bel Acres) on: Oct 13, 2020
