April 13, 1930 - October 7, 2019
She was predeceased by her adoptive parents, Arthur and Mabel Burkinshaw; and brother Walter. Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, John; daughter Marilyn Little (Richard); son Robert Gifford (Linda); grandchildren, Jacquelyn Northam (Michael), Corey Gifford (Meg), Carisa Scott (Kyle) and Breanne Gylywoychuk (Cory); and great-grandchildren Ella Northam, Oliver Gifford, Connor, Chloe, Brooklyn and Brody Gylywoychuk. Shirley is also survived by her loving sister Joy Batchelor; and sister-in-law Helen Johnston. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and their families.
Shirley was born in Winnipeg. She was raised in the North End and West Kildonan attending schools both in the North End and Centennial School in West Kildonan. Shirley and John met in 1947 at Grand Beach and were married October 14, 1950. They lived in West Kildonan until 1959 and then moved to their forever home of Transcona where they made many lifelong friends. John and Shirley, once retired, travelled for many winters to Hawaii, Florida, Texas, Arizona and California. Over the years they also saw many areas of Canada including the east and west coasts. Shirley volunteered for many years with Transcona Pipe Band and Meals on Wheels.
A celebration of Shirley's life will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day St., Winnipeg (Transcona), MB on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. The interment will take place at Glen Eden Cemetery, 4477 Main St., West St Paul, MB following the reception.
If friends so desire, donations may be made in Shirley's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2 or a charity of your choice.

My sincere condolences to John, Marilyn , Rob . There are many fond memories with Shirley & family having dinners together, travelling the curling circuit across Canada, trips to Hecla with the kids & many social events over the years. I remember Shirley as a wonderful, thoughtful caring lady & had the unique ability of keeping John in check. This tribute is coming from Tucson AZ. My heart goes out to you all. I was very saddened to see Shirley's obituary in the newspaper today. Shirley was a great supporter to the Transcona Pipe Band when we were all young! Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend her celebration of life due to a medical appointment on that day and time. I'm sure there will be lots of great stories shared that day. Take care, all of you, and draw strength from each other. Marilyn, I'll give you a call soon and perhaps we can go for another lunch together. Dear Mr. Gifford, Marilyn and rest of the family, we are so sorry to hear of Mrs. Gifford's passing. She was a lovely lady and well remembered. We will remember Shirley as a committed supporter of the youth in the community. Both in the junior curling and Transcona pipe bands. She was a great conversationalist and eassincerely interested in how “you” were doing!
