ALFRED JACOB DAHL
February 21, 1928 - October 8, 2019
He will be greatly missed by Bertha (nee Schlichting), his wife of 68 years, daughters, Arlene (Bob), Karen and Elizabeth, son Jonathan, and his siblings, Agnes Epp, John (Louise) and Rudy (Edna). He was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Helen Dahl, and sons-in-law, James Doran and Uwe Hofmann.
Born in Winnipeg, he spent his early years working on the family farm near La Salle. In 1950 he married Bertha and continued farming, but soon his passion for music compelled him to leave Manitoba and pursue a career in music. He was a talented, versatile musician who both played many instruments and taught music in MCI, Steinbach, Caronport, RJC and throughout the school system in Saskatoon. He also conducted church choirs, bands and youth orchestras, and his musical journey took the family as far away as India and the Philippines.
In his retirement years he volunteered playing piano wherever he was needed, including more than 30 years at Bethania Personal Care Home.
Throughout his life and travels, Dad's belief and faith in God was unwavering. Dad's legacy is his gift of music. We will miss his sense of humour and love of laughter.

Sorry I didn't know about this sooner. But I want to say how much I appreciated Alf coming each summer to Caronport when we had the Music Camp. He added so much wisdom, joy and blessing. It was a blessing to work with him and a memory I've cherished over the years. Blessings on you Dear folks. I'm imagining Alf making beautiful music with the Angels. Am so thankful to have known him. What a great director. Tour choir is one of the highlights of my 2 years at Briercrest. I sang first tenor. He would look at me in the back row, give me a wink … I knew he needed a little more power on the high note. Resting with the Lord! We miss you. Mr. Dahl was my Grade 11 band teacher at SRSS in Steinbach. I really appreciated the music he taught us, though some of the students didn’t cooperate! We realized later how good we had had it with Mr. Dahl when they hired a replacement who was totally incompetent! In my Grade 12 year, I learned SO much about singing in the adult choir he led at Emmanuel E. Free Church in Steinbach. Then, a year later (fall of 1978) I was very happy that he was hired on as a music teacher at Briercrest Bible Institute. I distinctly remember the first freshman choir rehearsal where he handed out copies of The Messiah and had us sight read “Great Was the Company of the Preachers”. All I could think of was “Wow ... he’s throwing us into the deep end!” But we all learned so much. He was also my instructor for three years of Concerto Band at BBI. There were less than 25 players each year, but there were at least one or two excellent players in each section and we took on some challenging music. Some standouts were a couple of von Suppe overtures (Light Cavalry and Poet & Peasant) and Chester Overture. Another great memory from Bible School was hearing him play jazz piano in a trio with a couple students on bass and drums after band rehearsal was over. I had heard him play oboe with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra but the jazz piano was astonishing! During my years at U of M in Winnipeg (1984-1988) I occasionally met up with him, on one occasion to borrow his full set of wooden recorders to do some multi-track recordings. I will never forget him as a musician and person. My condolences to the family because even though he passed 1.5 years ago I’m sure you all miss him. - Posted by: Kevin Penner (Student) on: Feb 07, 2021

Dear Aunt Bertha, Cousins, Arlene and Bob, Karen, Elizabeth, and Jonathan. I just wanted to express my condolences to you at this time. In my growing up years I was always very fond of my Uncle Alfred, I liked his friendly ways, his laughter, and was so proud to have an uncle with such wonderful musical abilities! Later on in life, while their family was in India, Cornie and I were so thrilled and blessed to receive a wedding gift from them- a beautiful tablecloth, crocheted by an Indian ladybug of cotton thread.. And years later, I also appreciated the times Uncle Alfred conducted the small orchestra which is such an important part of Manitoba’s own Passion Play in the LaRiviere hills. I am sorry that I am not able to attend the funeral but my heart will be there with you all. - Posted by: Esther Krahn (nee Schlichting) I am not (Niece) on: Nov 03, 2019

My condolences to the extended Dahl family. The miles of smiles and piano playing that I witnessed, whether at Kingsford Haus or Bethania will not soon be forgotten. Thank you. His playing of hymns always brought joy and participation in the circles of seniors my mother and aunts were part of. May you continue your music with the angels. - Posted by: Erika Epp Marand (acquaintance) on: Oct 28, 2019
