ALDO MERELLO
October 15, 1940 - December 14, 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Aldo Merello on December 14, 2019, at the age of 79. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family.
Predeceased by his loving wife Daniela Merello (August, 1985); his parents, Stefano and Adele Merello; and his brother Sergio Merello.
Aldo leaves behind his loving children, Patti and Rob (Erin McCance), Matthew (for whom he was cherished Nonno), and longtime partner Pat Cotter. He will be fondly remembered by extended family in Italy, Patrizia and Vincenzo Gelvi, and niece Cristina Gelvi.
Born in Genova, Italy, he and Daniela made their move to Winnipeg in 1967. They settled in a modest home on Nassau Street which shortly after became a "Little Italy" street, with many family friends close by. Aldo worked for CN and Via Rail for 28 years before retiring.
He was an avid gardener and loved being outside tending to his garden. A passionate animal lover, he could be seen feeding the squirrels outside his Nassau Street home or taking care of many of the neighborhood cats that came to visit him daily. Aldo could often be seen at the local Italian bar meeting up with his many friends, drinking espresso, playing cards, and watching his beloved Sampdoria soccer club on TV. Always a jokester, Aldo made friends wherever he went, with his warm smile and friendly nature.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to all the doctors who have provided Aldo with compassionate care over the last several years, especially the exceptional treatment provided by the doctors and nurses of the 3E Wing Palliative Care, Riverview Health Centre.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ignatius Church, 255 Stafford Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba. A private family entombment to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Riverview Health Centre Foundation.
He was a loyal and devoted husband, father, nonno, uncle, and friend to many.

We will forever miss him.

  • I will always remember Aldo for his sense of humour & the tricks he played on everyone at the Maintenance Centre. He was quite the character, but always a gentleman. I will miss him. - Posted by: Christine Ward (Co-worker at VIA Rail Maintenance Centre) on: Dec 17, 2019

  • I wish I had the words to ease the heartache of your dad’s passing and hope, with time, this passage will bring you some comfort. Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in Heaven where the love of your lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy. - Posted by: Debbie Payment (Former Co-worker) on: Dec 17, 2019
