I am so sorry for Lucio's pain and suffering and the loss to his family and friends. The first image that has come to mind is a picture I have of two 10-year old little boys sitting in my front yard wearing our East Elmwood Community Club baseball uniforms. We were such close friends and classmates at Kent Road School, we lived very close to each other. We spent so much time being happy little kids and our Mother's, older siblings and teachers' made sure of that; by fostering our growth and development by making our childhood so rich, rewarding and active. Going to Lucio's house was always exciting, how his Mother kept an immaculate and beautiful house, and being treated to his Mom's home baked Portuguese cookies was always a special occasion. We spent hours playing floor hockey in Kent Road school's new gym in the after school program and on the weekends. We then started to play on the same hockey team with the East Elmwood Road Runner's from 12 years old until we were 17 years old. Winning games rarely happened, but fun, friendship and a life-time of great memories were being made. We spent hours upon hours and years upon years of playing hockey on the outdoor rinks at East Elmwood Community Club. We felt special, as a hockey team we always had our own dressing room with our own stalls we would decorate with posters of our favorite NHL players. As we spent most of our free-time at East Elmwood, we teenagers may or may not have become proficient in the male adolescent art of taking 'hitchees' or 'bumper-shining' in the winter! In the summer's we bicycled throughout our youth with our other teammates and friends. Cruising around East Elmwood on warm and quiet summer nights- living and dreaming as teen-aged boys was so much fun. Being with Lucio was so much fun. When the Winnipeg Taxation Centre was being built in 1979 some of us neighbourhood kids would go and play at the construction site. We soon discovered a tractor we named 'Mary-Lou' would start without a key. Again, we may or may not have driven this tractor around the field across from the taxation centre; then leave it in the exact same spot so we could (may or may not) drive it over and over again during this summer! Lucio was always a kind and respectful kid to my Mother and other adults. He was very-well brought up with a loving and caring Mother and siblings who loved him very much. As a teenager, Lucio was always passionate, inquisitive and excited about life. Although we drifted apart as we became adults, I just know, as a childhood athlete, his loving family life and the help of the great teachers at Kent Road School - Lucio became a great and honourable man. You will never leave my heart Lucio. - Ian - Posted by: Ian Hillhouse (Childhood freind) on: Dec 18, 2019
