EDWARD W.J. (TED) CLARKE

He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 57 years, Marlene; two sons, Dr. Wm. Clarke (Christine) of Chilliwack and Robert Clarke (Jenny) of Edmonton; five grandchildren, Michael, Cailey, Caitlyn, Benjamin and Meikayla.
He was predeceased by his two sisters, Joan and Geraldine.
Ted was born in Fort William, Ontario on February 10, 1938, the son of Bill and Elsie Clarke. He graduated from Brandon Collegiate and the University of Manitoba.
After leaving university, Ted worked first for the Manitoba Department of Highways and then for the Metropolitan Corporation of Greater Winnipeg, followed by the City of Winnipeg. He retired in 1995 from the position of Director of Streets and Transportation.
Over the years, Ted was active in a number of professional organizations, particularly the Roads and Transportation Association of Canada (RTAC), the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), the Association of Professional Engineers of the Province of Manitoba (APEM), and the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers (CCPE). He served for a number of years on the Boards of APEM, RTAC and CCPE; and as President of APEM in 1986. He enjoyed his 60th Engineering class reunion this year.
At Ted's request, there will be no service.

Heartfelt condolences to Marlene and the Clarke family. My friendship with Ted began in 1978 through our mutual interest in French. Subsequently we discovered our mutual love of efficient roadways, automobiles and car racing, of classical music and photography, of biographies, recipes and calligraphy. Dear Marnie and family. We were so shocked and saddened to learn of Ted's passing. Over the four decades that we've known Ted, he was always a person of integrity, honesty and generosity. He was the consummate professional and provided sound advice and opinions always in the best interests of the citizens of the City. He will be missed. Dear Marnie, Bill and Robert and families, We have so many wonderful memories of the four of us, visiting Ouimet Canyon, Ted and Bob on the hunt for classic and antique cars to photograph, delicious meals chez your place or ours or (rarely) in local restaurants, impressive amounts of vino washing it all down. Bob’s sons Ron and Andy still remember a visit to Winnipeg back in the 1970s, when Ted took them for a drive in his sports car. They came back thrilled by the experience. Ted was one of a kind and set the standard for commitment to the cause of transportation. He was a very good example of a hard worker and was always very principled in everything that he did; something that seems to be waning in society these days. I will always value the days that I worked under Ted's leadership in the Winnipeg Streets and Transportation Department. They really were some of the best days of my career. Sincere condolences to you Marnie and your two sons Bill and Robert and their families. We are going to miss Ted's 'always sensible and meaningful' comments in the editorial page of the Winnipeg Free Press. I recently discovered Ted and I shared the same barber in Windsor Park who seemed to know many of our former neighbors.
