ALVIN GERRY KAUS
Al was predeceased by his father Harding and mother Dorothy (nee Burke), as well as brothers, Garry and Neil.
Left to mourn are his wife Kathrine; son Ryan and daughter Jodie, along with their mother Sandra; grandchildren, Makenna, Danika and Bret; brothers, Ron (Carole), Bert (Tim), Lloyd (Caroline); and sister Viv (Dave) Gallant; sister-in-law Sharon Kaus; brother-in-law Michael Petty; sister-in-law Linda Petty; cousin and great friend Harvey Haupt; numerous other relatives, and many friends.
Al was born and schooled in Winnipeg. After high school, he went to Rock Creek, BC to work for a geologist taking soil samples and drawing maps. He loved it there. Al returned to Winnipeg in 1975, working for the school board before being hired in 1976 by Agriculture Canada as a meat inspector at the "processing plants". He then moved to the Contagious Diseases Division under now-named the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. His job was to inspect the importation into Canada of food, livestock and other agricultural products and containers at Winnipeg (working closely with the Canada Border Services Agency), where many friendships were made. He also travelled rural Manitoba to visit and assist the farmers with their cattle and other animals. Al got to know the farmers over the years which he thoroughly enjoyed working with. In the summer of 2003, Al joined a team to respond to the terrible BSE outbreak in Grande Prairie, Alberta. After 35 years of service, Al retired in 2007.
Al enjoyed playing cards which cribbage was his favourite, golfing, hunting, lawn darts, reading, watching hockey and football, travelling when able to, and took great pride in his 1972 Cutlass Supreme. He also very much loved a good laugh!! For those that knew Al, he was a big, gentle bear with a great heart.
Thank you to Dr. M. Ewonchuck and Dr. J. Bellas for their on-going care and to the medical team at Concordia Hospital. Also, thank you to the fantastic home care case coordinator, Pamela Buekert, and to the wonderful, gentle, caring home care aides who attended to Al at home for these past several years.
As per his wishes, Al was cremated. There is no funeral service forthcoming.
Donations to the Winnipeg Humane Society, in Al's memory, are welcomed.

My condolences to the family. I had the pleasure to work with Al in the Animal Health department for a few years before he retired. I am forever grateful for the things he taught me and thankful for the laughs and stories we shared. And yes that Cutlass was his pride and joy! - Posted by: Jolene Byers (Co worker) on: Jan 11, 2021

I am Uncle Al’s favourite niece! Truth be told, I think he told us all that. Uncle Al was a giant to me. Big in stature, big personality, big laugh and big hearted. Summers at the lake, spending time at Grandmas, going to his place, are generalized times we got to see Al but the memories that make up those times are far to many to share here. I didn’t see him a lot through my adult years but I was able to be with him a few times in these past months and I am so glad I did! Will miss Uncle Al! Much love to you Kathy, Jodie, Ryan and Sandy. - Posted by: Kelly Ann Dueck (Niece) on: Jan 13, 2020

One of my favorite memories of Uncle Al was when my brother and I had a sleepover at Uncle Al and Aunty Kathy's house one summer and we went for lunch at what was once the Salisbury House on the Provencher Bridge. We then we went to Grand Prix and went Go Carting which was so awesome and then played Lawn Darts back at their place, it was so much fun and I wish we had done it more! I will always remember that sleepover as it was the first an only time I went for lunch on the Bridge, first and only time I went Go Carting at Grand Prix and the first and only sleepover I had an Uncle Al and Aunt Kathy's house! I will miss you and your humor, you always made me laugh, even recently! Love you Uncle Al. XOXO - Posted by: Janessa (Niece) on: Jan 13, 2020

Alvin was my very first friend in kindergarten at Kent Road School. The last time I was lucky enough to meet up with him was at one of the Elmwood High reunions. He was the same old Alvin. He never changed a bit since we were five. At least in spirit. Very sorry to hear of the passing of this very nice man. - Posted by: Walter Hickey (Childhood friend) on: Jan 11, 2020
