SAMUEL VERTONE
June 12, 1928 - February 5, 2020
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 69 years, Shirley; daughter Debbie (Larry Klassen); and son Randy (Lori). He was his son's first hero and his daughter's first love.
Sam was a gentle, kind and quiet man who loved his family unconditionally. He enjoyed the gift of being Papa to his six grandchildren, Gerald (Rachelle), Ashleigh (Brian), Joel (Carolyn), Jayme (Rachel), Kristi (Dustin) and Jordan (Lindsy). He was so happy to see them all settled in their chosen careers. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren, Nathan, Saidee, Paityn, Samuel, Jacob, Aubrey, Adelyn and Emily. Whenever they were around, Pops could always be found sitting on the floor playing with them as he did with his grandchildren years earlier. He was so proud of all his family, which included Larry's children Shane and Carly (Mike), and their families.
Until health prevented, Sam often visited his sibling's families in Vancouver. He will be missed by his sisters-in-law, Gail (Bob), Cheryl (Wayne) in Winnipeg and Ursula in Vancouver; brother-in-law Norman in Vancouver; along with numerous nieces and nephews in Winnipeg, Vancouver and Kamloops.
Sam was a proud C.N.R. employee and enjoyed a long career in Fort Rouge and Transcona. He and our family took train trips through the Canadian Rockies to visit the families in British Columbia every summer. After retirement Sam and Shirley enjoyed travelling and cruises. Somewhere different every winter. They especially enjoyed their time with family at their cottage in Victoria Beach. There is so much there that he has done, his presence will be felt always.
There will be no funeral. He asked that you remember him in thought and prayer in your own way. Interment and a private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in memory of Sam to a charity of your choice.
"You were the best husband, my rock, and the
love of my life. Always there for me. I am
going to miss you so very much but know
that you are always with me in my heart."
Now you are the shadow in my wine glass,
the wind that pushes my back, the rain
hat refreshes my heart and the star that winks good night.

Our condolences to Auntie Shirley, Randy, Lori, Debbie, Larry and your family. Uncle Sam and Auntie Shirley took me for a sleepover once to their home. I slept in Randy’s bed, went cross country skiing (first time...ever!!) and marvelled at the big trees driving down the street. I will never forget Uncle Sam’s kind, gentle voice. Hugs to you all. I am so sorry for your loss. Losing a parent is very difficult and your Dad/Grandpa sounds like he was an awesome individual. I think of you and your family often. It was a pleasure getting to know you and it was an honour to teach the Vertone children. I appreciated your support when they were in my class. Take care and I sincerely wish you all the BEST!! - Posted by: Ms. Daly (Kindergarten Teacher at Maple Leaf) on: Mar 02, 2020

We were so sorry to hear of Sams passing. We always looked forward to our families summer holidays together. A fond memory that I have is of Sam on a ladder picking cherries with a big smile on his face. Swimming and getting fruit in Oyama is always a happy memory. I really appreciate that you got a hold of us. Thank you. It has been a tough start to 2020 especially for you and Lori. Please offer our condolences to Lori. Randy, could you send us your email address We are thinking of all of you. Hugs to all Diane and Rob - Posted by: Diane and Rob (Cousin) on: Feb 11, 2020

I still remember the day we were selling one of our cottages which we bought from the original owner Mrs.Stow in 1967 or 68. My Mom was Maxine and my Dad Harold...so the signage on the gates read "HarMac Stowaway". We were pounding the For Sale sign into the ground of the front yard in about 1982, when a passerby said 'are you selling'? It was Shirley with Sam. The quickest sale I think in the history of Victoria Beach. The For Sale sign, was not even fully into the ground, put instead placed back into the shed. The Vertones were great neighbours over the years. Sam is just headed for that big beach in the sky. Shirley...know we are all thinking of you... - Posted by: Randy Clark (Ex-neighbour Victoria Beach) on: Feb 08, 2020
