MAURICE PAUL
Dad was born in St. Boniface, the only child of Lillianne and Antoine Paul. He had the privilege of being raised by his mother, his grandparents, Arthur and Eugenie Poisson, and his aunts in St. Adolphe, MB, on the family farm.
Maurice is survived by his children, Gerry (David Powell) of Dryden, Ontario, Brian (Cathy) of Winnipeg and Laurie (Brenda). Also surviving are his grandchildren, Casey (Elisabeth) King-Paul, Alexandra Paul, Ryan (Samantha) Powell of Manitoba, Colin Powell (Adam) of Toronto and Alison (Henry) Tse of Calgary; and his great-grandchildren, Caleb, Hudson, Patrick and Maverick Powell, and Adelynn and Charlie Tse. He was predeceased by his beloved Sheila in 2015; and his parents; grandparents; beloved aunts, Jeannine Zluchowski and Aline Logan; and cousins, Jack Logan of Montreal and Simone Senez of Manitoba.
As a young man, he was a reservist with the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, and he had fond memories of his regiment. He remained a dedicated follower of the New Democratic Party for his entire life. Dad enjoyed most of his retirement, from Shell Oil Refinery, building a cottage in Redditt, Ontario. He loved tinkering, fishing, oil painting, classical music, and French movies. The cottage remained his major project for more than 35 years. Uncle Mo was well known in Redditt for his generosity and time in helping others, loaning tools, dispensing advice on fishing and building techniques. He was happiest at the lake with Sheila. Dad also was an active volunteer at Children's Hospital in Winnipeg, and also at Ecole Riverview, assisting students with French for many years. After the death of Sheila, Maurice lived in Catherine Place, and then moved to Villa Aulneau. He made some new friends and renewed his acquaintance with people that he had met as a child in St. Adolphe. Maurice enjoyed concerts there, especially when Brian was entertaining!
The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care that Dad received from the staff of St. Boniface Hospital, during his final days.
A private family funeral will take place in the future, with interment at the Redditt Cemetery.

We consider ourselves so very fortunate to have known Maurice Paul. When Sheila became caregiver to our children in 1985, we soon realized that Maurice was also part of the package. But this was no ordinary caregiving. These two wonderful people loved and cared for our children like their own grandchildren and became our friends too. Our children, and we ourselves, have many warm memories, especially of time at the cottage at Redditt. Maurice probably took more photos of our children than we did and generously shared them with us. Maurice was a wonderful man - kind, generous, warm, capable. He was always ready to help others, always aware of those who had less, always cheerful even when facing adversity. There aren't many of his calibre. We are full of admiration for the man he was and the life he led, and extend our deepest sympathies to the family. - Posted by: Barbara Wiktorowicz/Ben Levin (Friends) on: Jun 18, 2020

I worked for Shell for 31 years starting with 7 years in St. Boniface. When the refinery shut down I spent the last 6 weeks with Maurice before being transfered. He was one of the most intelligent, best dry humor fellows you could find. His stories of the Italian Campaign in WW2 were a whole different way of looking at things. Glad that he was able to enjoy life for so long! - Posted by: Victor Laird (former co-worker) on: Jun 16, 2020

Gerry, Brian, Laurie & Family; Ryan, Colin, Alison, Casey, Alex & Family - my deepest condolences to you and your families. Maurice Paul was a loving, helpful and deeply generous presence in my life from the day I was born. It is with gratitude that I reflect back, to so many appreciated memories, rides in the truck, turkey dinners, fresh bread, trips to Sherbrook pool (though he never swam of course!) and especially to wonderful days with him and Sheila at the cabin - swimming (again, not him though!), fishing, blueberry picking, painting (+ lots of eating in between everything ;p!)... what a privilege to have had the care, kindness and generosity of this man in my life. - Posted by: Ruth Levin (Benefactor of his love and care) on: Jun 15, 2020

Gerry, Brian and Laurie So sorry to hear of your dad's passing. I remember he was always so happy to be at the cottage and had many wonderful years in Redditt. He was always smiling and always had time to talk when I saw him puttering outside. - Posted by: Carla Northcote-Brewer (Basso) (family friend) on: Jun 14, 2020
