ELFRIEDA DUERKSEN
Elfrieda was born in Flowing Well, Saskatchewan June 8, 1925, the eldest child of Peter and Katherine Rempel. Growing up in southern Manitoba, Elfrieda graduated from Mennonite Collegiate Institute, Gretna, following which she worked as a teacher for 10 years. In 1954 she married David Duerksen. Throughout her life she exemplified a strong belief in the importance of family, and she will be remembered as a devoted and caring wife, mother, and grandmother. She is also remembered for her steadfast Christian faith and love of the people of River East Church. Her organizational skill and joy in working with people was particularly seen in her dedicated church involvements. At age 68, her husband David had a disabling stroke. Elfrieda faced this and other difficulties in life with caring, practical resolve, strength, and thankfulness. In the final years of her life, despite a weakening memory and ability to communicate, she maintained her sense of appreciation for her connections with family and friends.
She will be fondly remembered by her children and their spouses, Joan (Bob Dueck), Carl (Cheryl Dyck), Donald (Janice Siemens) and Mark (Kimberly); her grandchildren, David (Carrie), Anthony (Jenny), Lisa Poettcker (Jason), Jessica Matys (Scott), Heather Getson (Dex), Kari, Christina and James; and great-grandchildren, Noah, Sarah, Theo and James. She is survived by her sister Dorothy Huebert and her sisters-in-law, Frieda Duerksen and Helen Braun (Len), nieces, nephews and many friends. She was predeceased by her husband David; her brothers, Rudy and Alfred Rempel; sisters-in law, Elvira Rempel and Mary Duerksen; and brother-in-law Helmut Huebert.
Special thanks to the staff at Bethania Personal Care Home and to the pastors and congregation of the River East Church.
A private graveside service was held at Green Acres Cemetery on July 2, 2020.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee.

I met Elfrieda in approx 1981 at River East Church at the morning out for moms programme. She was so kind. I was having my 3rd baby and as I came from England and had no family here, it was so lovely to talk to someone of my mom's age, and she was always so friendly and willing to chat. I learned a lot from her calm, patient demeanour. I am so sorry for your loss. Pauline. - Posted by: Pauline Mahmood (Acquaintance ) on: Jul 30, 2020
