DANIEL AURELE JOSEPH ST. GODARD

It is with profound sadness, the family announces the sudden passing of Daniel St. Godard on Sunday, August 16, 2020.
Dan was born on November 29, 1966 to Georges and Marie (Dèquier) St. Godard in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He attended St. Norbert Collegiate and University of Manitoba.
Dan married the love of his life Liz Potrebko, and they recently celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary. He adored and cherished his loving wife and his precious son Josh.
Dan was a very proud and passionate member of the Winnipeg Police Service. He was serving as a Patrol Sargent, just completing a distinguished 25-year career.

  • Val, so sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Brenda Slobozian (friend of Val) on: Aug 29, 2020

  • I first met Dan when Josh was in elementary school. Josh was in the same class as my son, and Dan and I would often meet, and chat, while taking our kids to school. Over the years, Dan and I would see each other in passing, and in every instance, Dan would always stop to chat with me. Recently, I had the opportunity to again, chat with Dan on what I believe was probably one of his last bike rides. Dan was driving by on his bike and he made a point to stop and talk to me, in front of my house. Although the conversation was only 10 minutes, we had an opportunity to talk about things like work, sports, and our families. Little did I know, this would be the last time that I would get to speak with such a great guy. My condolences go out to Liz, Josh and the remainder of Dan's family. It was a pleasure for me to be a part of Dan's life. He was energetic, funny and yes, always smiling. As I sit here typing, I shed yet another tear for a friend that was taken way too soon. Rest in Peace Dan. - Posted by: Wayne Hrabi (friend) on: Aug 25, 2020

  • Our deepest condolences to the family. Dan had a smile that could light up a room combined with a wonderful sense of humor. He was always so positive and full of energy! He was taken far to soon, its tragic. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this very difficult time. - Posted by: Del & Shauna Michie (Friend) on: Aug 25, 2020

  • My heartfelt condolences to Liz, Josh and family. It is still hard to believe that he is gone. Dan and I worked together for 2 seasons on our WPS bike patrol team and grew a friendship that would last our entire careers. His unifying, hard working team spirit made him a man you wanted to have as your first round pick on any team or shift. His leadership qualities went above and beyond just work...he truly and genuinely cared about his brothers and sisters in blue and the citizens of Winnipeg. We have lost a tremendous human being and our hearts will be broken for a very long time. Rest easy Dan. Watch over your beloved family and your workplace one too until we meet again. - Posted by: Shelly Glover (Co-worker & friend) on: Aug 25, 2020

  • My deepest condolences during this difficult time to Liz and Josh and the whole family. My hearts break for your loss. Dan was a good guy with a big heart and a great smile. May God bless you and your family with the strength during the difficult days ahead. Rest in peace Dan we will miss you. - Posted by: Lynne Pelletier Johnson (cousin) on: Aug 24, 2020

  • Liz and Josh, I am sending you my deepest condolences. Dan was one of the good ones, that huge smile will always be what I remember the most. He was comical, empathetic, trustworthy - I could go on. I met Dan in Division 11, when he and Brian worked a cruiser car. We laughed, joked and teased one another on a continual basis. As I sit and type this, I just cannot believe he is gone. I hope as time goes by, the Winnipeg Police Service can hire more people like Dan with strong moral values and the natural instinctive ability to care about the people he encountered on and off the job. It is time for you to rest my good friend - you have done your share. Love Tony & Ana Herntier. - Posted by: Tony Herntier (friend/retired co-worker) on: Aug 24, 2020

  • Dan was an absolute great person, great police officer and loved his family. When we worked together Dan was someone Myself and our shift mates could count on. My sincere sympathies to Dan’s family and coworkers. RIP Dan. Kappy - Posted by: Kevin Kaplan (Peer) on: Aug 24, 2020

  • My wife Lindsay and I extend our deepest condolences to Liz, Josh and Dan’s entire family. I first met Dan nearly 20 years ago when we became sponge hockey teammates. We spent many seasons together on the Pirates. Dan and I continued to stay in touch post sponge hockey years and would meet up for coffee or a cold beer on occasion. Or just a simple text or phone call to see how things were going. Dan was a wonderful man and had the kindest of hearts. He was a good friend and his presence at my retirement a few years ago meant a lot to me. I will always cherish our friendship and have very fond memories of him. Rest easy my friend. - Posted by: David Obirek (Friend/Brother in Blue) on: Aug 24, 2020

  • The last few days have been difficult. On Sunday Evening the world lost an exceptional human being. It is with deep sadness that I announce my good friend from my W.P.S. years Danny St. Godard left us far too early from a heart attack. Danny was 53 and was just starting to plan for his upcoming retirement. Danny was a true friend. We were team mates on the W.P.S. "Cops for Kids" Bicycle Relay team for many years. We were room mates on the road for many tours. We cycled thousands of Km's together all across North America, side by side with smiles on our faces (see photo example). Dan was one of my best friends over my career. He was a proud Police Sergeant, amazing team mate, great cyclist, dedicated family man and most importantly the kind of person anyone would be proud to call a friend. During this tough week my wife reminded me that only the good die young. Danny was not only good, he was a great man and I am going to miss him badly. Since my retirement from the W.P.S. in 2011 Danny and I continued our friendship by meeting every spring & fall for breakfast. We both looked forward to those meetings to catch up on life and share a few laughs from the many tours we had the honour of participating in for Children's Wish. The damn Covid took away our chance for one last breakfast together this past spring. I just spoke to him 2 weeks ago as we started to plan for our fall Breakfast. I can say that Breakfast at Smitty's will never be the same again. We will meet again my friend and I look forward to that day. God's speed Danny. You will be greatly missed and never forgotten. I am still struggling to understand why you had to leave us far too soon. "You go straight" Good bye my friend! - Posted by: Clyde Raven (Friend & Police colleague ) on: Aug 24, 2020

  • Words cannot fully express my sorrow for your loss Liz, Josh and entire family! May time help you heal and bring you peace. - Posted by: Małgosia Gronowski (Friend of Anna) on: Aug 24, 2020

  • I last saw Dan on the day of his unfortunate passing biking by my house while I was cutting the grass at my house in Fort Garry. I Jokingly asked him if he was investigating me for something as I knew he was from the north side. He laughed with that great smile and told me he’ll have biked 50k that day once he made it back home. He was in a great mood as we talked like friends who knew each other for years even though it was just a couple of years. I will miss him a lot as he was one of my favorite clients. He talked very proudly of his son and was very much in love with his wife. My deepest and profound sympathy. The world needs more people like Dan not less. Heartbroken! - Posted by: jeremy regan (Barber/friend) on: Aug 24, 2020

  • I worked with Danny at the Bay St. Vital when he got hired on at WPS. He was excited to join the force. I have many fond memories of working with him. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. My thoughts are with the St. Godard family on this day. - Posted by: Glenn Cummings (co-worker ) on: Aug 24, 2020

  • Danny St Godard.....a guy that comes along and makes the world a better place during the too short time he is here....one of my Cops for Cancer the Headshave stalwarts and a real good grinder humping calls that I dispatched to him when I worked in the Comm Centre....used to walk and talk in Kildonan Park when he was walking his dog Buster...the talk was always about Family and life in general and with that constant smile on his face.....ran into him in HQ a few weeks ago and the first thing he says is how is that little daughter of yours....not so little I says 19 yrs old and she still talks about meeting Buster.... class act...genuine disposition and gone way too soon before more people could have the chance to meet him....Rest Easy Danny - Posted by: Mike Ewatski (Colleague/Friend) on: Aug 24, 2020

  • Dearest Liz: I was deeply saddened when I heard the news. I know and understand what you must be feeling - the loss of a husband, father, friend, and soul mate. My deepest condolences and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your son during the difficult time. Take care my friend Madeline Kohut - Posted by: Madeline Kohut (Friend) on: Aug 23, 2020

  • I recognized Dan years ago from work, we'd say "hi" to each other, not much more. About fifteen years ago our paths crossed at work and like a best friend you didn't know you had, this long conversation happened over the phone. We laughed and I remembered thinking this guy was way too nice. Last year I found Dan sitting across from me in the office. It was as if time stood still, full head of hair, glasses, smiles and laughter. He immediately connected with people, charming, genuine and the officers whom he supervised never uttered anything but confidence. The Winnipeg Police Service and the City have lost a great asset in Dan's passing. I do not think there are words to express the grief felt for those lucky enough to have had him as family. - Posted by: Tim Diack (Work friend ) on: Aug 23, 2020

  • As a co-worker I knew Dan more from the early mornings in the gym more than a co worker per se. ... I can honestly say that I never saw Dan without the huge smile on his face that he had become known for ..... they say in life that good guys finish last and this couldn't be more true than with Dan St Godard ..... a truly great human Being of which there are far too few of anymore .... rest in peace Dan ..... - Posted by: Tony Bettens (Co worker) on: Aug 23, 2020

  • My deepest condolences to Danny's family. I also knew Dan a lifetime ago - at St. Norbert Collegiate. He was the sweetest guy. I enjoyed being his friend and even though our friendship ended in high school due to distance, I always thought of Dan as a friend. My heart broke when I heard of his sudden passing. I'm thankful he had such a great family surrounding him - including the Winnipeg police family. - Posted by: Tammy Rempel (Warkentin (schoolmate) on: Aug 22, 2020

  • I would like to pass on my condolences to Dan’s wife Liz and his son Josh. Dan and I crossed paths numerous times over our careers as we were very close in seniority. As of late we talked and texted often as we did the same job and same Platoon in different Districts. I enjoyed talking to him as he always had a smile on his face even when I would say the most off coloured things to him to try and get a reaction, all I would ever get was a smile and laugh and “ahh Smitty”. No exaggeration, nicest Police Officer I knew and just an all around great guy. I will miss you my friend, Godspeed and we’ll take it from here. Please rest easy after a job well done. • I first met Dan in 2003 when I was assigned to the A3 platoon in D3. I had the privilege of being mentored by Dan, along with the other great A3 guys, in my rookie years. Dan was an awesome guy to work alongside. He was always calm, had a great big smile and knew what to do in any situation. It's so very difficult and heartbreaking to hear of his passing and I would like to take the opportunity to offer my sincere condolences to his family…. I’m so very sorry for your loss. • Sending all my love to Liz, Josh and the rest of Dans family during this extremely difficult time. It was an absolute honour and joy to know Dan He was one of the most kind, warm, welcoming, funny guys I had the pleasure to know from our Riverbend Days. Our kids played hockey together way back in the day, and Dan never let an opportunity to smile and wave pass from those days till last Thursday when I saw him Out riding his bike. I honked and waved at him and he blew me a kiss. He absolutely adored his family, and that was obvious to anyone he spoke to. Sending you all my deepest condolences. Thank You Dan for your friendship and your service while on this side of heaven. Rest In Peace - Posted by: Chassity McIntyre (Family friend ) on: Aug 22, 2020

  • Dan was a good friend and coworker. He was a genuine good man that had great morals and possessed a great sense of humour. Dan was a hard core Montreal Canadians fan and I am a hard core Boston Bruins fan. As a result, when we would run into each other on or off work we would trade barbs about each others team. I last spoke with Dan via text about a work related issue on August 13. His last text to me that day was sending me a Montreal Canadians flag and said "Take care DL". I will keep that text in memory of Dan. I am very sad and frustrated that Dan was taken way too soon. My condolences to his family... I will miss Dan.... - Posted by: Dave Lysyk (friend and coworker) on: Aug 22, 2020
