DOUGLAS JAMES MCLEAN

Douglas gained his wings on August 20, 2020, at the age of 64, after a lengthy battle with Lewy-Body Dementia (LBD). We are broken hearted but thankful that he is no longer suffering.
Doug was born in Keewatin to William and Sofina on July 15, 1956.
He attended school in Keewatin and Fort Francis where he graduated with honours. He went on to earn a degree in Bachelor of Science from the University of Winnipeg. Doug thoroughly enjoyed his career at both Great West Life and IBM as a Project Manager.
Doug loved life! He loved to laugh, joke and was a prankster; a trait he proudly passed on to his cherished granddaughter. He fondly spoke of his childhood growing up by the Winnipeg River. His love of lake life continued with family camping and cabins in Lakeshore Heights, Pinawa and Gimli throughout his adult years. He loved to fish, canoe, swim, bike ride and take long walks.
Doug loved to travel and enjoyed spending time in Mexico in the winter months. As a proud McLean, he cherished every second he was in Scotland with his wife, Sandy. He bought out the souvenir stores!
He spent many years volunteering with the Cancer Society. After his retirement, he helped Transcona Seniors Association with meals. When Doug was diagnosed with LBD, he wanted to help others understand the disease. Doug and Sandy gave a lot of their time sharing their experiences through media and the Alzheimer Society, participating in studies and interviews.
Doug will be lovingly remembered by his mother, Sofina. He was preceded in death by his father, William. His wife, Sandy, his son Drew (Vanessa) and granddaughter River, his stepchildren, Amber (Nik) and Craig, his sister, Sharon (Kevin), in-laws, Buck and Shirley, his beloved dog, Ruby and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
There will not be a formal service per Doug's wishes, but will be lovingly cared for in Lakeshore Heights.
If you wish, donations in Doug's memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2 or a charity of your choice.
Thankfully, Doug was able to remain at home for the majority of his battle with LBD. We wish to extend our gratitude to the Holy Family Home and in particular, his nurse Halyna, for the loving care they gave to Doug while he was there. I would also like to thank his caregiver, Howard for keeping it fun for as long as possible, Dr Barry Campbell and the Alzheimer Society.

Doug, the moment our eyes met, we fell deeply in love. Those beautiful green eyes now live on in River, so when I look at her you will always be there.

You are finally at peace, my love.

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • Oh Doug, I wish I knew that you had passed and so sorry I didn’t get a chance to talk to you before you left this life. So many lunches, so much time spent talking and laughing. As a mentor, you were always there for me. You were always very supportive, pointing me in the right direction time after time. I will always remember laughing when you put a spin on the sixth sense infamous line. We were at lunch when you told me about the love of your life, Sandy. It was a special time. You will always be forever in my heart. I will miss you my friend! May you Rest In Peace đź’• - Posted by: Cynthia Gordon (IBM coworker) on: Sep 27, 2021

  • Doug wasn't just a project manager at IBM. He led a large team of dedicated professionals, always with compassion and caring first. My sincere compliment is that Doug was one of a kind, a real character, and I enjoyed working with him more than most. I look back fondly on our time together when I visited Winnipeg over the years. - Posted by: Willie Gruber (Coworker at IBM) on: Dec 04, 2020

  • Doug & I met at IBM where we worked together. Doug was one of those special characters you meet in life. Opinionated, bright, full of fun and at times, controversial but..... not always recognized, he was a team player. Although he had a tough exterior, once you got to know him and he got to know you, he shared the respect & confidence of co-workers. It is most unfortunate that he succumbed to this disease too early in life. Kind regards to Sandy & his family. - Posted by: IBM work Associate (Worked together at IBM) on: Aug 26, 2020

  • I worked with Doug a long time and enjoyed many laughs with him. We lost touch over the years but he was always a good man and I will always have fond memories of our times together. Rest in peace my friend. - Posted by: Tino Tropea (former colleague at MDS/ISM/IBM) on: Aug 26, 2020

  • I wanted to share a favorite memory but I haven't been able to pick just one. My favorite memories are the times I would see my Mom and Doug together and see just how much they loved each other. They are the times where he made me feel cared for by being there when I needed him and even though he didn't come into our lives until I was older, he made me feel like a daughter to him. They were the times we went to Pinawa and I could see him in his element, the outdoors, whether it was exploring the dams or sitting around the bonfire. They were the times we would see something ridiculous and before anyone else could say something, he'd have a witty comment about it. He had a wicked sense of humor. I am thankful for all those times and many more than I can list, and now I am thankful that you are finally at peace. We love you Doug. - Posted by: Amber (Stepdaughter) on: Aug 25, 2020

  • I only knew Doug through Sam-- but given her great love for him, I know he must have been one priceless companion! Everybody should have a great love such as they felt for one another. And now, Sam-- go do what I know Doug would want you to do: Take great care of yourself, love those around you, and TRAVEL whenever you can! - Posted by: Donna StClair (Friend) on: Aug 25, 2020

  • It was amazing how Doug could navigate the high stress that was his business life and then come home and initiate a laugh with his neighbours perhaps after snow blowing their driveways. A tremendous guy we had the privilege of knowing. Our condolences to the McLean Family - Posted by: Barry Prosyk /Tanis Young (Friend and neighbour) on: Aug 25, 2020

  • For my money Doug will always be the coolest cat there ever was. He helped me out a lot when I first moved here, since I didn't know anyone or have any friends nearby and I couldn't work. I was at home all day by myself while Amber was working and it got to be very boring and lonely. Doug would always call out of the blue when just I needed it and make up a lame excuse to swing by and pick me up, we would just go on drives for hours around the country side to little towns and to the lake, he taught me a lot about Manitoba, and all the best places to eat. Those little trips meant the world to me and I hope he knew that. I love you Doug. - Posted by: Nikolas Davis (Son in law) on: Aug 25, 2020
