THEODORE (TED) RANICK
December 26, 1930 - September 7, 2020

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ted Ranick, in his 89th year at Fred Douglas Lodge, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Predeceased by his mother Mary (nee Sidorchuk) and father Peter Ranick. He will be missed by brother Bob Ranick, London, Ontario, sister Pat Senior, Winnipeg, Manitoba, niece Tracy Ranick, Sarnia, Ontario, nephew Scott Senior, and his children, Gabriella and Zé Beckta, Winnipeg, Manitoba; nephew Dale (Catherine) Ranick; and their children, Nolan and Curtis, St. Thomas, Ontario; as well as several cousins and many friends.
Ted led an active life with a variety of interests and was always supportive of family, friends, and the community. In his younger years he was an Air Cadet which inspired him to eventually obtain his pilot's license. In his Isaac Newton High School years, he was part of a foursome of track athletes that dominated Winnipeg events for years and competed successfully at the Provincial level. He enjoyed golf into his 80's at Elmhurst Golf and Country Club and curling at West Kildonan Curling Club. He was active at times at both clubs at the Executive level.
As a proficient artist, family and friends looked forward to receiving their personal hand painted Christmas card each year. His biggest passion and commitment was as a coach in the North End of the City providing mentorship to a multitude of youth. Over many years he coached minor baseball, lacrosse, and his favourite, hockey. A graduate of National Hockey Coaches School he guided a number of teams to complete in provincial championships. Besides his volunteer contributions he was a career Manager of the City of Winnipeg and worked tirelessly to improve and establish recreational facilities throughout the community.
The family is thankful for the dedicated and wonderful care he received at the Burrows Avenue Fred Douglas Lodge during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB R2C 1E8, www.cropo.com.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice.

Always remembered, Forever loved.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Met Ted in the early 1960's when I was the Recreation Director at Northwod Community Centre and worked with him for 33years. Even prior to meeting him, if you talked to someone that played baseball and especially hockey in the North End they were probably coached by Ted Ranick. He was a coach that was ahead of his time in terms of the fundamentals of the game and could take a rag tag group of youngsters and create a formidable team. He was not only dedicated to the young men he coached, but was a mentor to them, helping then become confident adults in later life. Had the pleasure of joining Ted for lunch each month in the last while with some other has been curlers from West Kildonan Curling Club and if you mentioned a hockey players name ,even if that player was now 60 or70 years old Ted could tell you what position he played for him. • Ted and my dad Ken were lifelong friends and track mates at Isaac Newton where their team won the provincials. In recent years, they would get together at the Marigold for lunch, my dad will really miss Ted. Ted was a wonderful man and friend to so many kids at Northwood. He coached almost every sport and would always spend extra time to help you get that extra skill, in my case learning how to throw a curveball. He also ran a crafts night where you could learn how to make a balsa wood airplane. He played a big part in so many lives, I'm so grateful that he was a part of ours. Ted, Jack Byzuk, Alec Hamilton, Richard Dudek and others made the Northwood community a great place to grow up in during the 60's & 70's. Our condolences to his family. - Posted by: Dwight Peters (Friend) on: Sep 19, 2020

  • My first full season of organized hockey was Bantam A at Northwood Community Centre back in the mid sixties. Ted held our first meeting after the six-man football team came off the practise field as most of them would be playing hockey as well. Ted's equipment manager was Alex Hamilton. The football team had some success but the hockey team had not. The first words out of Ted's mouth were "gentlemen, we have the athletes in this room to win the City Championship. There were some snickers and some shock but his prediction came through and we won not only the Cities but the Provincial Championship against a "stacked" Brandon team as well. "Headman the puck, pass the puck, don't slap it, don't think, just react, and backwards skating, lots of backwards skating but most importantly, constant positive energy & encouragement. He always made practises efficient & fun. He cared about this bunch of North Enders on and off the ice. He will be missed. • So many of us who grew up in the North End benefited from Ted's kindness and leadership. Besides opening up his cottage to us he also assisted us in getting summer, relatively well-paying jobs in recreation with the City of Winnipeg. Ted introduced me to the game of golf at Falcon Lake and though my game hasn't improved much since then, it has been fun. Thank you Ted and condolences to your family. - Posted by: Harry H Finnigan (friend) on: Sep 17, 2020

  • Condolences, What a great loss of a great person as he helped so many over the years, especially myself. I remember times when he took some of his young hockey playing friends & my non hockey playing friend out to the Falcon Lake area so he could spend time with us during the "off season" It was great to help him with the building of his cabin just to be with him & to have him take us fishing. - Posted by: Garry Bell (Former CPAC hockey player) on: Sep 16, 2020
