HELEN LORIMER
March 2, 1936 - October 24, 2020

Helen Lorimer, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2020, at the age of 84. She was much loved and her wise and gentle spirit will be greatly missed.
Helen was mother to Susan Hasinoff (Ian), Joanna Lorimer, Sarah Shantz (Brad), Ian Lorimer (Melanie), and Karen Leggat (John). She was a loving grandmother to Ben, Catie (Taylor), Megan (Jesse), Tom, Sophie, Ryan, Tara, Cole and Grace. She will be missed by many relatives in Scotland, as well as her sister Gwen in London, England. Helen was predeceased by her husband Alan in 2001.
Helen had a lifelong love of learning and valued education. She obtained her Bachelor of Education as well as her Masters, all while working and raising five children.
She worked as a counsellor at Brandon University in the Mature Student Centre, helping older students achieve their educational goals. This was something she could relate to on a personal level. After moving to Castlegar, BC in 1985, she worked at Selkirk College teaching English as a Second Language. She enjoyed her relationships with students and colleagues, always striving to learn and be helpful to others.
Helen had an adventurous spirit, even travelling to Japan for a year sabbatical. She loved to travel, and visit friends and family along the way. She enjoyed golf and visiting with her golf group, walking her dog Daisy, reading, listening to music, and spending quality time with her daughter, Joanna. Helen was a strong advocate for people with developmental disabilities and served on the Board for Kootenay Society for Community Living. Helen attended the Presbyterian Church, both in Brandon and Castlegar for many years.
Following a diagnosis of Parkinson's, she moved to Winnipeg to be closer to family. The last number of years were challenging for her, but she always maintained strength, good humour, and grace throughout. Thank you to the staff and volunteers at Simkin Centre for their compassion and dignified care of our mother.
A private family service will take place on Sunday, November 1, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street in Winnipeg. Livestream will be available.
