THELMA MARIE CHURCH

It is with great sadness that the family of Thelma Church announce her peaceful passing on October 29, 2020.
Mom will be remembered by her children, Glenn (Linda), Kent (Marleen), Lynn and Cameron (Cindy); grandchildren, Robert, Corin, Erin, Kim (Cam), Jessica (Martin), Shannon (Jason), Carla (Mike), Miranda (Chris) and Cari (Neil); great-grandchildren, Eric, Cori, Connor, Lily, Rowen, Theo and Brinley; and great-great-grandson Luke. She was predeceased by her husband Roy in 2007 and granddaughter Courtney in 2017.
Thelma was born May 15, 1927, in Los Angeles, California but lived the majority of her life in Winnipeg. Mom was an accomplished swimmer and loved the outdoors; cross country skiing in the winter and picking blueberries in the summer near the family cottage at Star Lake. She was a great cook and loved hosting holiday and regular Sunday dinners for the whole family. Their home was open to family and friends and she was always there when anyone needed help.
She enjoyed volunteering as a swimming instructor, with polio patients and physically challenged children and felt rewarded when teaching adults to swim when they were afraid of water.
She also volunteered for many years with at Tuxedo Villa.
Mom moved to The Portsmouth in 2011 and lived there until last spring when she had a fall and went to Deer Lodge, then moved to Charleswood Personal Care Home in April. Mom was a very social person and felt the isolation caused by the restrictions imposed because of COVID-19.
The family would like to say a big thank you to all the staff at Charleswood Personal Care Home for the kind and compassionate care Mom received during such trying times.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Thelma’s daughter Lynn and I were high school friends and I have happy memories visiting their home where Thelma was always interested and welcoming. I remember her as a young-seeming mom with a flair for style and fashion. I also remember her letting us drive her brand new car when were driving novices, with her as a passenger, encouraging us to drive with confidence. Rest In Peace, Thelma. I know you will be missed. - Posted by: Susan Berry (Friend ) on: Nov 08, 2020

  • To all of you! From all of the Evans family May your memories of Thel and her influence on your lives get you through the times when you miss her so...Thel was such a great friend to me. She and Roy were my family when I moved to Winnipeg in the 70s. Because of the special friendship she had with my Mom, Pegi, I always felt so close to Thel. Oh, The stories that Mom and Thel and Pat Tackaberry shared With me! They were a trio to be reckoned with as teenagers in Winnipeg! And they remained friends through all their lives.......for me ...Christmas was here when I received my card from Roy and Thel and in later years,Thel. And We always had a great telephone chat at Christmas and on her birthday! I loved her voice, her sense of humour and who she was .....i believe that Mom, Thel and Pat are together again! - Posted by: Sally Evans (Family friend ) on: Nov 07, 2020

  • I'm so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. I have countless happy memories of your family while growing up. Your parents door was always open and welcoming to all the neighbourhood kids. So many good times and laughs spent around their dining room table. She was always so happy to cook a meal and insist you stay for dinner. She always made me feel like I was part of the family. I will miss her infectious laugh and sense of humour. Heartfelt condolences to the family. - Posted by: Norm Usher (Family friend) on: Nov 07, 2020

  • We took care of Mrs. Church’s lawn maintenance and snow clearing for quite a few years until she sold her home. She was a lovely lady, always thoughtful and cheerful. It was a pleasure knowing her. Our condolences to all your family. - Posted by: Ray and Nancy Didat (Friend) on: Nov 07, 2020
