SISTER MARY ROSE (ANSELM) HAMMERLING, O.S.B.

With deep sorrow, the Sisters of St. Benedict announce the death of their beloved member, Sr. Mary Rose Hammerling on November 23, 2020 at 9:35 a.m. at Grace Hospital, after a courageous battle with pneumonia.
Sr. Mary Rose faithfully lived the Benedictine monastic life for 68 years and with her passing, an important chapter in the life of Benedictines of North America comes to a close.
Sr. Mary Rose was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 8, 1929 to Frank and Rose (Dubanski) Hammerling. Her parents had emigrated to Canada from Poland in 1927, thus Sr. Mary Rose was the first born of three children in Canada, her parents having previously suffered the loss of six other children in Poland. She was very treasured in a family full of faith, love and deep trust in God.
Sr. Mary Rose received her elementary and high school education at Lord Nelson School, Isaac Newton High School and St. Mary's Academy. She graduated with a B.A., B. Ped. and B. Ed from the University of Manitoba. She pursued graduate studies towards Masters Degrees in English at Thomas More College, University of Saskatchewan and Theology at St. John's University, Collegeville, Minnesota.
Sr. Mary Rose entered the Sisters of St. Benedict on September 25, 1950 and made her monastic profession on September 2, 1952. At the time of her entrance into the novitiate, she was given the name Anselm, which she proudly carried till the year 2000 when she reverted to her Baptismal name Mary Rose.
Her ministry in the community included education, health and administration, chairing various committees and boards, formation work, spiritual direction, serving on council and as prioress. In the wider church, she served on the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council and Conference of Religious of Manitoba. She was elected first councilor of the Federation of St. Gertrude and later President. While President, she served on the Council of the North American Benedictine Prioresses and on the Abbott Primates' Commission of O.S.B. Sisters. She was the keynote speaker at the 1993 Symposium of O.S.B. Women at the Benedictine College of Sant' Anselmo in Rome.
Sr. Mary Rose was a gentle woman of deep faith and prayer, with a welcoming smile to all she met. She loved being with people and was never at a loss for words. She exhibited quiet leadership and always enjoyed socializing.
She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Rose Hammerling; her infant siblings, Peter, Catherine, Mary, Helen, Polly and Eva Hammerling; her sister Genevieve Frances Joy (Bill) Kormylo; brother Anthony (Mary) Hammerling; niece and nephew, baby Mary and Dean Kormylo.
She is survived by her Benedictine community, nephews, Tom (Lana), Jim and Rod Kormylo (Vivian); nephew Mark (Freda) Hammerling; nieces, Debbie Patching, Cheryl Hammerling and Karen (John) Pearson; cousin Joseph Dubanski; as well as numerous great nieces, nephews, close relatives and friends.
Due to Covid restrictions, a private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Benedict's Monastery on Friday, November 27, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. presided by Rev. Richard Arsenault and commendation by Sr. Dorothy Levandosky, Administrator with interment to follow in the Monastic Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be Srs. Gerarda Pura, Mary Coswin, Marie Baker, Irene Burzynski, Joan Mormul and Marcelline Pasloski.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made in Sr. Mary Rose's memory to St. Benedict's Foundation, 225 Masters Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R4A 2A1.
The Sisters wish to express their gratitude to Dr. John Mayba for his dedicated service and the doctors and nurses at Grace Hospital, the caring staff at St. Benedict's Health Care Centre and Sr. Mary Rose's family and friends for their loving support and care. May she rest in peace.

  • I would like to extend my prayers and condolences to Sr. Mary Rose's family and the Benedictine sisters. Sister Mary Rose was my mother's cousin, and as a little girl, I always felt so special, having a nun in the family. And to top it off, she was my brother (Greg's) godmother! You can't beat that! I used to love our family visits with Sr. Mary Rose (Sr. Anselm back then). Having moved away, I saw less of her over the years, but I recall the last visit I had with her about 10 years ago. It was a family visit, including my brother Greg and my aunt Judy and their families. We met with Sr. Mary Rose and it was a beautiful visit. I could not help feeling her joy and peace and incredible faith after being in her presence....it felt like I had been a little closer to God. I shared the news of Sr. Mary Rose's passing with my family this week, and the words of my brother Greg expressed it so well..."She was one of the most beautiful and peaceful people I ever knew." God bless you, dear Sister Mary Rose, and rest in peace. - Posted by: Joanne Kostyra (family/distant cousin) on: Nov 29, 2020

You have truly lost an incredibly SPECIAL woman.. God Bless.. Carol & Families - Posted by: Carol Foster (Friend ) on: Nov 28, 2020

  • I was most fortunate to have Sister Mary Rose as my Godmother. That was a priceless blessing because I always felt the power of her prayers in my life. I was able to visit her on occasion at the monastery on Master's Ave and she always welcomed me with the warmest smile and so much love! She was so gentle and peaceful. I have a picture that I treasure of my first Holy Communion with Sister Anselm standing beside me on that special day. She has such a beautiful Spirit and it manifested and expanded throughout her life. I know that Spirit will continue to bless us all. I will miss her. - Posted by: Greg Kostyra (relative) on: Nov 28, 2020

  • I will always remember Sr. Mary Rose in my life [our lives.] She was always so welcoming and would always come over and say Hello. Always warm and loving. When my Mother passed, she came to me and gave her condolences and shared with me to continue my relationship with my Mom in prayer. She would always be with me. Sr. Mary Rose also said, spiritually, my relationship would grow with my Mom. This was so kind of her to step out and come to me at the Epiphany dinner at St. Benedicts. This helped me so much in my life. I give thanks for her in so many ways. She shared her faith and love so beautifully. Thank You Sr. Mary Rose for everything you gave me. I so appreciate and I have been honored to know you. We give our condolences to her family and friends and all the Sisters of St. Benedicts Monastery. karen & Michael Deley - Posted by: Karen & Michael Deley (I am a benedictine oblate and experienced Sr. Mary Rose's beautiful smile and hospitality several ti) on: Nov 27, 2020

  • My prayers and condolences to Sr. Mary Rose's family and Benedictine sisters as she is buried today after her funeral Mass from St. Benedict's. I often see her grad photo on the wall at St. Mary's Academy when she received her BA at St. Mary's College. I had the pleasure of serving with her for a number of years on the Winnipeg Archdiocesan Pastoral Council under Archbishop Wiesgerber. She often led us in prayer and always offered her wise and generous council to our deliberations on behalf of the Archdiocese. She is now an advocate for us all as she gains her eternal reward. May she rest in peace! - Posted by: Chris Butterill (Served on the Winnipeg Archdiocesan Pastoral Council with her) on: Nov 27, 2020

  • I always felt comfortable with her and her gentle ways. I went back to St Benedicts Academy about 30 years ago on a training seminar I had supper with her, and she wanted to know how I had been. She always made you feel special when talking to you I remember her beautiful smile and often think of how she influenced my life. • Dear Sisters, Sincere condolences! Sister Marie-Rose was such a welcoming, friendly person! I will never forget how she always made me feel at home at St-Benedict's dinner table when I came for Taize Prayer.
