ROBERT (BOB) ENGLISH

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Robert (Bob) English, after a brief battle with cancer.
Bob is survived by his daughters, Linda and Anna (Jason) and his beloved grandsons, Connor and Kai. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Ruth, in 2007.
Bob was known by many names; Dad, Casino Bob, Bob 2, but his favourite name of all was Grand-Pappy. Born in Winnipeg's North End in 1928, Bob had an incredible 92 years of love and laughter. He spent the first years of his career in Yellowknife, NWT where he golfed one of the first rounds at the Yellowknife Golf Club. Six decades later when the YGC had the audacity to use a photo of him on their marketing materials, he returned up north to laughingly demand compensation, for which he was treated like a celebrity and rewarded with a free round of golf, club and cart rental.
Bob was a passionate curler. He was a Lifetime Member, and former President of the Pembina Curling Club. He loved everything about the game, and he was so incredibly proud when both his grandsons joined the Pembina CC as junior curlers. He loved going to watch his grandsons curl almost more than curling himself!
Bob was the consummate road tipper. He and his lifelong best friend, Dick Charge, took a road trip every summer, driving out west to see friends and family. They had the trip down to a science, and the car was packed to perfection. We would like to thank all of our friends who adopted Casino Bob as their honourary dad and grandpa. It meant so much to him to have friends across generations, and across the country. He adored his "West Coast Kids" and some of his fondest memories were made on these trips.
In 2017, Bob moved into Concordia Village Assisted Living. He absolutely loved living there, he made some wonderful friends, and told everyone who would listen that he should have moved there years ago. We would like to extend a big huge thank you to the staff and residents of Concordia Village for making Dad's final years so amazing.
Because of COVID restrictions there will be no funeral, however we hope to have a celebration of Bob's amazing life once it is safe to gather again.
In lieu if flowers, donations may be made in Bob's name to the Curling Canada For the Love of Curling scholarship program at www.curling.ca

  • I want to offer my sympathies to you all for your loss. I grew up knowing your dad and mom as “Uncle Bob and Auntie Ruthie”. We lived on Pembina Highway in the Fifties and Sixties and they were our next door neighbours and family friends. Their house, and your grandpa and grandmas, were always open to my three brothers and I for a visit and a treat. The huge tree in the front yard was our climbing tree. The last time I saw your dad was at the Pembina Curling Club a number of years ago during the MCA bonspiel. Many the memories that you have of your dad, and mom, bring you peace in the coming days. - Posted by: Charlene McCrea (Bartmanovich) (Former neighbour ) on: Dec 13, 2020

  • My deepest sympathy to Linda, Anna and her family. May your memories sustain you at this time. - Posted by: Faye Fergusson (Friend ) on: Dec 12, 2020
