MIKE KARPENKO
He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 42 years Debbie, kids ,Chelsea and Michael (Jennifer), grandkids, Sophie and Nina, grandpuppies, Ellie and Judy, brothers, Bill and Paul, sisters, Mary, Verna (Henry) and Lydia (Dave), sister-in-law Stacey, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents Stephen and Mary, brothers, Pete, John and Stevie, and sisters, Lena and Helen.
Mike was born March 30, 1955, and grew up on the family hobby farm in West Kildonan. He never lost his love for farm animals and would frequently pull off the hwy to admire a herd of horses and cattle.
As a journeyman electrician, Mike worked in many places, including Rockford, Illinois. In 1980, he joined CP Rail where he was employed for 40 yrs. In 2018, Mike was presented the CP Rail CEO Award for Excellence in Operative Safety, something he took very seriously during his career. Known affectionately as 'Kooby', Mike had many co-workers who appreciated his straight-shooting, quirky ways.
Mike was a man with many interests. He loved camping with the Gates, spending time at sister Lydia's cottage in Gimli, as well as sister Verna's farm in Boissevain. In his younger years, Mike spent countless hours with buddies working on cars. His prize possession was his '73 Camero which he still owned to date. Pumping iron led to competitive bodybuilding in the 80s and 90s, winning Mr. Manitoba and several other titles. Mike's biggest passion was his kids activities from school to sports. He travelled to Thailand, Europe, the US, and across Canada to support and cheer them on. He took an active role in coaching several teams through the years and he was always mentoring in sports, work and life. Mike also liked fishing, playing golf and he had a great eye for finding golfballs. Mike truly loved following most sports, which was even more exciting with his daily Proline picks. In addition, Mike was an avid lover of music. Cranking up the tunes of classic rock, golden oldies, or Michael Jackson was a favourite pastime - but no one trumped Johnny Cash. Mike loved being 'Gigi' to his granddaughters, who he absolutely adored.
He never threw in the towel (as he would say) it was just a battle he couldn't win. However he was able to fulfill his wish by being at home when the battle ended. In death as in life, Mike did it his way.
Mike will be laid to rest at All Saints Cemetery.

Debbie Karpenko and extended family. I just heard from Lydia of Mikes passing. I'm so sorry to hear of this great loss. Sending you all a big hug. Prayers for Mike and healing for all of you. I have a few fond memories of Mike working out at the farm on his car with the big exhaust fan on the hood with his brothers and being his partner at Lydia's wedding. I remember walking down the aisle with him and wondering how someones arms could be so big! I remember they had to alter his pants because his thighs were so muscular. He really was Mr. Manitoba. I remember him always laughing. God speed Mike, to infinity and beyond. - Posted by: Kathryn Charambura (Friend of the Family) on: Jan 01, 2021

I never knew Mike long, probably a few years, but as a child only. At the time I knew him he was the youngest Karpenko. We lived about 1/4 mile from the Karpenko farm in West Kildonan. I knew him as Mikey. This would have been in the 50s. My heartfelt condolences to the Karpenko family and especially Mike's wife and children and grand kids - Posted by: Marie Doolan (neighbor) on: Dec 19, 2020

Well Kooby old friend...you beat me too it...however...Im not letting you off the hook just yet...I believe that you are with the lord right now....so when your speaking with him make sure he knows about all your buddies at cp rail....you know who we are and you'll know what to say....let him know that were coming there too and that we wont be all that far behind you....lead the way just like at the railway....Mikes family can take solace in the fact that they wont be the only ones missing him...it will be hard to get use to...no Kooby to talk to...always your friend. The world has lost a great guy and we lost a great friend. Really going to miss the stories and the visits to our office. Our families had some great times together and Mike had a heart of gold always trying to make you happy and always great with the hockey kids. Lots of great memories we will have from our hockey trips and get togethers. We all have alot of great memories of Mike and if I know him he would be telling us DON'T WORRY. I guess GOD is tired of looking for his golf balls up there so he has no worries now Mike will find them all. Rest in peace our friend. First off, may I express our deepest condolences to Debbie, Michael, and Chelsea for the loss of Mike. He was one of a kind! I worked closely with Mike for most of my career at CP Rail. He showed me the ropes at work when I first started in Area 4 and for years guided me in the basics of weightlifting after work in the gym. Mike was always my inspiration. He made me laugh on many an occasion just by being Kooby! There are a few special people you meet throughout your lifetime that will always stick with you. I got to see Mike for how he really was. The man had a soft heart and a kind soul. He loved his family to no end, and was passionate for the things he loved, like bodybuilding and sports. The neighborhood wonāt be the same without you. You will be missed my friend, but never forgotten! Jeoff and Patty Martin - Posted by: Jeoffrey Martin (Neighbour and co worker) on: Dec 12, 2020

The one story I will always remember which brings a smile to my face and a chuckle. Is the first time we both traveled to the Nationals in Montreal. It was the morning after the finals and had time to kill before returning to Winnipeg. So Mike had invited my sister and I which had traveled from Edmonton for contest for breakfast. So after ordering a breakfast that would have fed up to six people. So at the end of this huge meal neither one of us had room for one more bite! But Mike being the person of never wasting anything Lol ! Decided to take the couple pancakes we hadnāt finished! No one at the table aware of this. Still with time to kill until our flight. We decided to take a sightseeing tour of this beautiful city. Midway through the tour to our amazement Mike pulled these COLD PANCAKES out of his gym bag!! We all laughed so hard that I truly believe was probably the best thing of trip ! Mike will always hold a place in my heart for his humour ! - Posted by: Barry/Donna Crawford (Friend) on: Dec 12, 2020
