THOMAS CHECKLEY
September 28, 1931 - December 12, 2020
Tom was a loving husband, father, doting grandfather and great-grandfather. He was thrilled when Colt was born to carry on the Checkley name. Tom was predeceased by his parents, Ephraim and Elsie Checkley, his three brothers, Fred, Alvin and Floyd, three sisters-in-law, as well as in-laws, Alfred and Gertie Pinder and son Grant. Tom leaves his wife, Edith, daughters, Brenda and Beverley (Darrell) Arnold, daughter-in-law Mona Checkley, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Bud Pinder and sister-in-law Pearl (Doug) Miller, along with several nieces and nephews. All six grandchildren will say he was always a prankster - every one of them has been distracted by him only to turn around and find that he had stolen their dessert.
Tom always put his family first. He coached Grant's hockey team for many years and used his rural connections to schedule many out-of-town hockey games. The girls were dragged along, like it or not. Tom never missed any of their activities or events.
Tom was often a man of few words who loved a challenge be it building something he had never done before or fixing almost anything. He was indeed our Mr. Fix-it. Tom liked to dance, curl and golf. He also enjoyed travelling - especially to Branson and to golf at Fairmont Hot Springs with friends and family. More travel was the plan before dialysis became a regular part of Tom's life. Tom fought an amazing battle right to the end even with the many challenges and issues during the six years he was on dialysis. Tom was one of a kind and he will be greatly missed by us all!
We would like to thank the staff in the Home Hemo Dialysis unit at Seven Oaks for their exceptional care and compassion during Tom's dialysis journey.

I was very sad to read of Mr. Checkley's passing before Christmas. He was a favorite client of mine when he'd come into the branch to do his banking. He was always friendly and fun, and would show an interest in my life as well. Reading his obituary brought a smile to my face though as I could just see him pulling pranks on his grandchildren when the ice cream was served. My deepest condolences to Edith and the rest of the family. - Posted by: V. Irvine ((knew him as a bank client)) on: Feb 12, 2021

Tom's mischievous grin jumped out at me from the obit page today!! So very sorry to hear of his passing. So many fun memories. What a kind, generous, loving gentleman. "Uncle Tom" is fondly remembered by our family. I am sure he is looking for a curling rink and something to fix right now!! I also must extend belated condolences for Grant, as I just read about his passing today as well. Heart is doubly broken today... All my love to all of you... Sending hugs, love, & wishing you courage during these trying times... Paulette, Trin, Natalie & Stephanie & families - Posted by: Paulette Dupuis ("old" friend) on: Dec 19, 2020

Worked with Tom at Employment Standards ,Dept. of Labour , Prov. of Manitoba investigating wage complaints and ensuring compliance. Tom was a " character", great to work with, had lots of stories and gave us many laughs. Always held fond memories of two Manitou boys working together. My condolences to Edith and family in your loss of a good man. Jim Crawford. - Posted by: James R Crawford (friend, co-worker) on: Dec 19, 2020
