ARTHUR (ART) FUNK
June 21, 1938 - December 14, 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Arthur Funk, on December 14, 2020, at the age of 82.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Anna (Anneke); children, Jennifer and Eric; his sister Katharina Krebs (Ken); brother-in-law Melgert Dekker (Gudrun); nieces, Caroline and Tina Krebs; and his aunt Katie Berg. Art was predeceased by his beloved mother Helena Funk.
Arthur was a loving, kind, generous and supportive husband and father. Art was always welcoming and accepting of others. He loved to be with people, and had many good and lifelong friends. Art dedicated his life to education, volunteering, and mentoring others. Art loved life and, in his words, he would like to do it all "one more time".
Sincere gratitude to the Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home for their care.
Cremation has taken place, and interment will take place at a later date.
In memory of Art, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer Society, CancerCare Manitoba, or to the Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home.

Condolences & Memories (22 entries)

  • Anna, Eric & Jennifer - My deepest sympathy to all of you - working for and with Art was a wonderful experience - he was genuine, and fun to work for. I loved visiting with you also, Anna and seeing both you and Jennifer once again last year. Many blessings to all of you as you now travel the road ahead. - Posted by: Lorraine Klippel (Worked for Art in the Science Department at Kildonan-East) on: Jan 14, 2021

  • I just heard of Mr. Funk's passing. He was the Principal at Donwood when I attended there until he retired. He was the sweetest, most caring man in the world to my sisters and myself and I will never forget that. Years later, when I worked at Sobeys on Henderson, he remembered me and asked how my family was. After, he always tried to see if I was working so he could say hello. He was truly a great man and will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Tami Prinsloo (Former Student) on: Jan 13, 2021

  • Anna, Eric, and Jennifer, The comments above reflect what we all knew about Art, and are a wonderful commentary of a life well lived and a man well loved and respected. I have so many wonderful memories of Art starting with him being one of our first babysitters, and certainly the most fun! I remember helping him mark papers, deliver leaflets for an election, and him taking us for treats after. I was delighted when he suggested Donwood Elementary School for the German program when our eldest child was starting school. He was the principal there for two of our children, and sadly, retired before the third began. They loved having "Uncle Art" for their principal! I loved him dearly and he will be missed. I can hardly believe he is gone. May God draw especially close to you at this time, provide you with the comfort only He can give, and fill you with the peace that passes understanding. That is my prayer for you. - Posted by: Betty Watson (cousin) on: Dec 28, 2020

  • I can't say I knew Art well; we met through golf, Art having to suffer through playing with we two hackers; Tony Riffel and myself. While I only played with him a handful of times, I will always remember and treasure those times; Art was such a wonderful person to golf with; interesting and gentlemanly. My condolences to you and your daughter whose name I am embarrassed to admit, I have forgotten. - Posted by: Bill Coe (Golf buddy) on: Dec 22, 2020

  • Art was a hut mate while we attended Manitoba Teachers College and a colleague in River East School Dividion. Always friendly and witty Art always saw the good side. A dedicated, gentle, generous and sincere teacher who prioritized family and his students. We are so saddened to learn of his passing and wish to extend our deepest sympathies and sincerest condolences to Anna, his children and his family. May the sun forever shine upon his face. • Carmen and I met him (again) while he was a resident at Bethania. While he could not remember us from our time at Miles Macdonell Collegiate in the early '70's, he was always kind to us and sought to offer us a kind word. Before we ever remembered him from his face, first... we remembered his voice! Unmistakable! We will miss seeing him at Tea Haus gatherings when functions resume at the PCH. Our thoughts are with his family. Carmen (Braunig) and Rick Dondo - Posted by: Carmen and Rick Dondo (Friends of the family and a former student) on: Dec 19, 2020

  • Art was a very dear friend with whom I went to school and practiced the profession of education as we were both teachers at Kildonan East in the River East School Division. We were also colleagues in administration and always remained close friends. I loved Art dearly; he was always kind and caring - he was extremely intelligent and creative. I will miss Art forever as he cannot be replaced! - Posted by: Ed Buller Sr (Close and dear friend) on: Dec 19, 2020
