DAPHNE RUTH LORD
(née ALPORT)
December 5, 1927 - December 14, 2020
From her parents, Daphne inherited her thoughtful, determined and inclusive manner, love of travel, music and artistic pursuits, community service and an infectious sense of fun and humour.
Born and educated in Regina, Daphne received her post-secondary education at the University of Toronto. After moving to Winnipeg in 1970, she and husband John joined St. Charles Country Club where lifelong golf and bridge friends were made (as well as two holes-in-one!).
Officially recognized for her 50 years volunteering with the Canadian Cancer Society, Daphne also devoted considerable time to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
She remained a Saskatchewan girl at heart. Summers at "Open Arms" at Katepwa in her younger years were followed by more than 50 years at Waskesiu, where she helped create "Neestows", a special summer home filled with lasting memories.
She was predeceased by her loving husband John (1977); parents, Dr. Edward and Ruth Alport; sisters, Elizabeth Bâby and Pat Dobie;, brother Dr. Bill Alport; and their spouses. Left to cherish her memory are her three daughters, Nancy (Terry), Jane (Dave) and Patty; grandchildren, Kim, Megan, Bryan, Jill, Jeff and their spouses; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends' lives were enriched by time spent with her.
As Daphne's dementia progressed, we learned "the heart will always hold what the mind no longer can." The family would like to express their deep gratitude for her home carers of two years, Kelly and Heather, and staff of the Charleswood Care Centre over the last several months. Their compassionate care provided Daphne with comfort and companionship through to the end. We now consider them all a part of our extended family.
Cremation has taken place and, at Daphne's request, there will be no service.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in memoriam to the charity of your choice.

So very sorry to hear hat “Mom” has passed. She was such a vibrant light in her daughters’ families and those of us who were their friends. I had the delight of knowing Daphne through a long and deep friendship with Patty. No one has ever made me feel so much a part of their family. Nor have I ever laughed so hard: Christmas dinners at Jane's, vacations at Waskesiu, visits on Swindon Way; Daphne was the Matriarch of a family filled with love and wit. I am blessed to have known her. Thank You always Patty, for sharing your Mom. - Posted by: Melanie Last (Patty's Friend - the skinny one) on: Dec 30, 2020

I am sorry for your loss. It is never easy to lose a parent, and having it happen during the Christmas season seems to make it more difficult. All the best to you and your family. - Posted by: Bruce Macleod (friend) on: Dec 20, 2020

I was so sorry to read of your Mom's passing. I remember her wonderful smile and that she was such a vibrant person. My parents, Bob & Myrt Nicholson, were good friends with your parents through St. Charles and I remember them attending parties at Mom & Dad's. Your Mom was such a warm and caring person. I'm sorry to hear that she had Alzheimer's. My Dad passed 20 years ago from the same. My heart and deepest sympathies go out to your family during this difficult time. Cherish all the happy memories and keep them close. - Posted by: Susan Nicholson (my parents were good friends from St. Charles Golf Course) on: Dec 20, 2020

When we think of Auntie Daph we think of laughter, belly laughing in fact, and a smoke in her hand! She always brightened the summer for Boo Boo and Yogi with her visits on the way to Waskesiu. She lived life large and as you said touched many hearts. You have written a wonderful tribute to her. We have you all in our hearts and my prayers! Extending my deepest & heartfelt sympathy to the Lord family on the passing of your dear mother Daphne Lord. In my tenure at the Canadian Cancer Society I valued the opportunity to connect with Daphne. She was an advocate in the cancer cause and deeply proud of her father's legacy in his pivotal role in establishing the Canadian Cancer Society as a volunteer driven organization in cancer control. Daphne always smiled when she recounted her father's legacy and the organizations origin in Regina! Thinking of you all during this very sad and difficult time. Wishing you peace and comfort in the days ahead, Dear Daphne Rest in Peace. Lynda Ruban Canadian Cancer Society (retired) - Posted by: Lynda Ruban (Canadian Cancer Society (retired)) on: Dec 19, 2020
