MARTA GNITECKI
October 11, 1938 - January 15, 2021
She is survived by her daughter January (Michael) Luczak, and granddaughters, Julia and Elise; sister Teresa Wesolowska of Gdansk, Poland; and nieces, nephews, and stepchildren, and their families, in Canada and Poland. She is predeceased by her husband Edward, and sister Krystyna Federak of Ostrowiec, Poland.
Marta was born in Ostrowiec in 1938. She and her two sisters were raised by their mother Julia, and grandmother Maria, after their father Jozef, was killed in the Second World War. She was very nurturing, and found her calling in nursing. At the age of 15, she attended a boarding school for nursing in Kielce, and at 18 she returned to Ostrowiec as a nurse for the city hospital.
Marta was well-respected for her dedication to her work, and well-liked for her cheerful and friendly demeanour. She was also well-known for her singing and dancing in a choir and dance ensemble that travelled throughout Poland and other countries of the Communist Bloc.
Marta met the love of her life, Edward, when he was on a trip in Poland, and she immigrated to Winnipeg to be with him in 1971. She worked hard to learn English and achieve her nursing credentials in Canada to continue in the profession that so suited her.
In 1980, Marta and Ed built their house where they remained for the rest of their lives and raised their daughter January, of whom they were so proud. Marta was the perfect Babcia to her granddaughters, Julia and Elise, always elated to share her time and Polish culture with them.
Marta was full of energy and kindness. Her petite stature was capable of incredible strength, and her heart had endless love for those closest to her. She will be dearly missed.
Wieczny odpoczynek racz jej dac Panie.

Thank you so much, dear friends and family, for your beautiful words of condolence. It means so much to me that you would so honor my mother. I’d like to mention that Cropo did an amazing job in managing all aspects of her funeral services. With our funeral director, Kaitlin's, care for every detail, we could pay our last respects with class, dignity, and peace. I am grateful to Cropo, to the Holy Ghost Parish for a lovely funeral mass, and to our family and friends, who have all shown great respect and love for my mother. - Posted by: January (Daughter) on: Jan 24, 2021

We cherish Marta in our memory, as a lovely, warm person, who loved family, singing, and dancing. I remember Marta and Ed when they were already in their 70’s during a wedding party in Poland. They received applause due to their performance on the parquet. They were outstanding. She was special in many aspects of her life. God I’m not asking you, how come you have taken her away, but I thank-you for giving her to us. - Posted by: Zbyszek Gnitecki (nephew ) on: Jan 20, 2021

Marta was a wonderful, loving wife to my Dad "Eddy". Their teamwork made their marriage a success despite the differences in life experiences. As one unusual example of their teamwork: They re-shingled their home when Dad was 80 years of age. They both worked on that roof while younger neighbours stared incredulously and took photos. I will forever be grateful to Marta for the way she made My Dad's last four decades happy and fulfilling. I know she is being welcomed into The Lord's Kingdom. Our condolences to you January, and your family. We had the pleasure of knowing your mother and father as we were neighbors down the street from your family home. I had the opportunity to babysit you a few times when you were a young girl. Your mother was always very pleasant, smiling and showed her love for you very much. I recall seeing her in her nursing uniform a few times and remember how professional she looked and happy. Keep memories close, she was a beautiful soul. - Posted by: Janik Family - Christine, Joe, Yolanda & Family (Friends/Neighbors) on: Jan 19, 2021

We are so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing! She will be missed dearly but always remembered for her kindness and cheerfulness. We first met her when your dad brought her to our house to introduce her to our family, shortly after her arrival in Winnipeg. Such a positive and energetic person ! We admired her effort to learn English and her willingness to retake her nursing education so that she could practice her profession in Canada. Throughout the years she shared with us how proud she was of you and your family. More recently our mom appreciated her company and her kindness at church’s Leisure Club gatherings! Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. - Posted by: Alice, Eva and Irena Wagner (Friends) on: Jan 19, 2021

My aunt had a heart of gold she loved and cared about her whole family. Also my aunt and uncle were the best dancers I have ever known. That’s how I will remember them forever love and miss them both. - Posted by: Helen Wesolowski (Niece) on: Jan 19, 2021

I am so sorry for your loss. January, your mom was such a loving and gentle person, who always managed to be upbeat no matter what. I will always remember your mom elegantly dressed up on a Saturday night for an evening of dancing with your dad. Sometimes we were lucky enough that they even danced a bit for us in the living room. I thought it was the sweetest. She will be missed by many. - Posted by: Lisa (Family friend ) on: Jan 19, 2021
