JOSE GARCIA TORRES
February 15, 1942 - January 23, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather.
Joe is survived by his loving wife Eduarda; his son Nelson (Paula); grandchildren, Adriana and Alicia; brother Joao; niece Carminda (Ze Manuel); nephew John (Ana), and many nieces and nephews in Portugal. He also leaves behind his sisters-in-law, Odilia, Isabelle (Paulo), Maria, and extended family.
Joe was born in Portugal, the youngest of many siblings. When he was 18 he immigrated to Canada where he became an iron worker in which he dedicated 40 years of his life to. His job led him to different parts of Canada and the US but Winnipeg was home for him. Joe spent 50 years of his life with his wife Edie, together they became parents to their son Nelson. As a family they enjoyed many memorable camping trips as well as trips to Portugal. Upon retirement he spent his time socializing with friends and he was known to enjoy a good soccer game cheering on his favourite team - Porto. Most of all he was a proud grandfather. "Grandpa Joe" was present every morning to ensure his granddaughters were safe on the bus for school with a smile and a wave good-bye, now it's our turn to smile and wave good-bye.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the SICU staff at the Health Sciences Centre for their excellent care.
Due to the current health restrictions a private funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 28 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street with interment to follow in Assumption Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, friends may make a donation to a charity of one's choice.

  • I don't have very many memories of my godfather but I know he was always nice to me and loved to crack a joke or two but always done with a smile. I wish I had gotten to know him better in my later years but I will always have the few memories with me to remember him by. Madrinha if you see this my heart goes out to you and I hope to get in touch with you one of these days. - Posted by: Renato Faria (Godson) on: Feb 18, 2021
