SOFIA SEMKOWSKI
Sofie is survived by her daughter Olga (Jim); sons, Bob and Morris (Debbie); grandchildren, Debbie (Evan), Michael (Lisa), Kelly (Jay) and Dena (Dustin), Deanne (Kevin); as well as eight beautiful great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved and adored.
Family meant everything to Mom, and she was so very proud of all of us.
Sofie was born in the Ukraine, the eldest of four children. She met her loving husband Michael in Germany during the war, and they immigrated to Winnipeg in 1953, where they shared 62 wonderful years together. Sofie was a hard-working woman who never took the easy way. When she wasn't working, she was cooking, and boy, could she cook! There was always a meal on her stove for anyone who happened to stop in. She was a master perogy maker; people came from far and wide for a dozen of Sofie's potato and cheese, mushroom, blueberry, or sauerkraut perogies. She made all the best Ukrainian dishes, like holubchi, perishky, and borscht, but her years working in restaurants also came with a repertoire of international dishes like latkes, handmade burgers, egg rolls, pizza, soups, and baking of all kinds.
Food was a way of showing her love, and boy, did she love us! We will miss her glowing smile, the sound of her laugh, and the warm and familiar feeling we got when spending time visiting her.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Holy Family Nursing Home, especially the Covid unit staff, and the staff on Unit 3A, who acted as her extended family during the past three months. We would also like to acknowledge the many lifelong friendships she was blessed with, as well as the special friendships formed during her eight years as a resident at Concordia village.
Due to current restrictions, a private family service will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, on February 2, 2021, 11:00 a.m. Join us via livestream or leave a condolence at www.cropo.com.
In lieu of flowers we would like you to perform a Random Act of Kindness. The world needs a little more of that these days.
We love you Mom, Rest in Peace.
