BARRY EDWARD GEORGE THOMPSON
January 2, 1949 - January 23, 2021

It is with deep and profound sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our dear brother, uncle, great-uncle and friend on January 23, 2021. Barry was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him.
He was predeceased by his wife Kelli (nee Ward) in June 2018, as well as his parents, Betty and Les Ross, and his younger brother Jeff Ross.
He is survived by his sisters, Betty Black (Gary) and Fay Stafford (Larry); niece Jennifer Black; nephews, Denny Black, Sam and Ben Stafford, and great-nieces and nephews, Trinity, Cadence, Asher, Silas and Lawson. He is also survived by his parents-in-law, Jim and Joyce Ward; brothers-in-law, Bill (Anita and Parker) and Jimmy. Also left to mourn his passing are his Aunt Margaret Pattern, and his cousin Penny Ross (Don).
Barry was raised in St. James and attended Britannia School and St. James Collegiate. As he was growing up he made many friends from the neighbourhood which continued on for many years up until his passing. He enjoyed his regular lunches with "the boys" from St. James, either at a restaurant or at the home of his long-time friend Trevor.
Upon completing high school Barry entered the trades and completed training as a Journeyman Machinist and continued on to become a Computer Numerical Controlled Operator. Over his 50 plus years of working, he spent time with CP Rail, Versatile Farm Equipment and Bristol Aerospace (now Magellan Aerospace). He retired from Bristol in August 2016, after a 30-year career with them. He continued to maintain his work friendships through his "retirees" breakfasts - times he hated to miss and thoroughly enjoyed.
If you ask his family and friends to describe Barry, they will tell you he was one of a kind, generous, easy-going, thoughtful, caring and a loyal and true friend. Barry was a person of support and trust; a person with broad knowledge; a person you could count on - no questions asked. His niece and nephews loved his sense of humour and his caring ways - never forgetting a birthday or special occasion and always wanting to show his pride in their accomplishments. When he became a Great-Uncle, he said "I always knew I was great" - and he showed it in his love for the twins and his great-nephews.
Barry married the love of his life Kelli in 1986 and they enjoyed a very happy life filled with travel, times spent at the Race track, fishing, golfing and hosting family and friends at their beautiful home - where the door was always open. They were both die-hard Blue Bomber fans and loved the Winnipeg Jets. The memorabilia they collected on both teams showed their passion for their "boys". He was lost without his "Kiki" when she passed away in June 2018, but he kept her memory alive, knowing they would be together again. And now they are.
Lovingly remembered and never forgotten by family and friends.

  • Sincere condolences to the Thompson / Ross and extended family. Barry was the old brother of Faye Heather (my Sisters best friend) and her cousin Penny was my best friend growing up in St. James for many years. We played together everyday our entire little lives outside on the street and often under the watchful eye of Barry and my Brother Bryan. They were friends as well. Barry was always kind, quiet and especially considerate. He adored his younger Brother Jeff and had a special place in his heart for him. I am not surprised to read all the tributes about what a great loyal friend he was to many. People don't change just because they grow up. We were all lucky to grow up on that Street in Winnipeg with many many other post war Kids - it was fun and Barry was always part of it. A sad time for all who knew him, especially those in his loving family left behind. Heather MacLeod Boyle. - Posted by: Heather MacLeod Boyle (Neighbour across the street ) on: Feb 06, 2021

  • Barry was like a brother to me. We had a mutual respect and love for one another. When I think of Bar I think of trust, kindness, compassion, patience and honour. Barry would give a person the shirt off his back. He was genuine and he was solid. When I went to university most of St James thought I was wasting my time, not Barry. He constantly encouraged me particularly when I was struggling. When I left for Calgary he would call and check on my mom just to make sure she was ok. I thought/think the world of Bar and I will miss him deeply. . He was a kind and gentle friend and I think of him everyday. - Posted by: Dale Emerson (Long time Friend and "Best Man" ) on: Feb 06, 2021

  • Uncle Barry was the most genuine, kind hearted and, thoughtful person I have ever come to know. He was passionate about his sports teams, his friends, his family and of course, my aunt Kelli. Barry always lit up the room and brought a smile to everyone's face. I have never met a more selfless individual than him. Whether it was the pool parties he hosted, the countless games of pool we played, or just hanging out in his backyard on a hot summer day, Barry's doors were always open. Those who were fortunate enough to share Barry's life with him know how truely blessed they are. I remember the first time my girlfriend met my Uncle, I had never seen anyone rave about another individual like she did. She could not believe how funny, caring and thoughtful he was, in just the short time they had spent together. I think this says a lot about who he was, his character and the effect he had on people. My heart is heavy, I wish we had more time together, I wish I got to have just one more visit with him. But I know he's in a better place, reunited with Kelli again, laughing and cheering on the Jets. He will always be in my heart and forever be remembered as the most amazing man and uncle that I was lucky enough to know. Love, Parker - Posted by: Parker Ward (nephew) on: Feb 03, 2021
