IDA KATHLEEN FULFORD

On January 26, 2021, Ida Kathleen Fulford, formerly of Swan River, MB, passed away in Winnipeg, at 98 years of age.
Ida was born in Minitonas, MB on June 1, 1922 to the late Aden Albert and Edith May (Crawley) Pearson. She grew up in Minitonas and, on October 24, 1940, she married Hugh Fulford of Minitonas. In 1941 Hugh joined the Air Force, serving in Brandon, MB and then Debert, NS before returning to Minitonas to resume farming. In 1954 they moved to Swan River when Hugh became manager of the Swan Valley Co-op Livestock Shipping Association, while Ida stayed home to raise their six children. She was active in the United Church UCW and was a member of the church choir. She was also a member of the Rebecca's chapter in Swan River and, with Hugh, sang in the Golden Agers Choir, and curled at the Swan River Curling Club.
Ida was loved by all who came to know her for her warmth, her compassion and her genuine acceptance of others. Her home in Swan River was an open door for all her children's friends and anybody else who happened to be passing by. It was amazing how many people just "dropped in to say Hi" when she was baking her butter tarts or Grandpa Pearson was baking donuts. Everybody was welcome. She was thrilled when, more than 50 years later, many of those neighbourhood "kids" (Bruce, Tom, Bill, Murray, Aaron, Doreen, Merle and others) decided "to drop in to say Hi" to her at The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg, where she lived for the last three years.
One of her proudest accomplishments was when, at age 75, she decided it was time to learn to drive. She took driving lessons in Winnipeg and back home in Swan River, where she took her test and received her driver's licence. Such freedom!
Her greatest joy, however, was spending time with her grandchildren. She loved that they still wanted to come to visit her and, in her own modest way, would tell us that she didn't understand why they did (it was the butter tarts Grandma!), but she wouldn't have it any other way.
At age 89 she moved to Winnipeg and lived at Lindenwood Manor, an assisted living complex where her Swan River friends, Mike and Aileen Leung, also lived.
Ida was predeceased by her husband, Hugh, in 1996; her brother, Harry Pearson; her sister, Dorothy Goyne (Cowan); her daughter-in-law, Phyllis; and numerous in-laws.
Left to mourn are her daughter Kay (Randy) Yeo; her five sons, Don, Aden (Joanne R.), Ray (Diane), Bill (Susan) and Nelson (Joanne E.). She is also survived by her brothers-in-law, Ivan and Keith (Freda) Fulford; sister-in-law Norma Hanley; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-great-grandchild.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held later in Swan River when we are able to get together again.
Ida's family thanks the staff at The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg for the awesome care they provided. They truly were like a second family to her.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the resident's recreation fund at The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg, 276 Hugo St. N., Winnipeg, MB R3M 2N6 or St. Andrew's United Church, Box 514 1st Street N., Swan River, MB R0L 1Z0, or your favourite charity.

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • Ida, what an impressionable woman and mother she was to every kid and many others that visited the corner of 9th and Ditch Rd. Nurturing, gentle and forever positive with a smile that would make you melt, just like the butter on those buns fresh out of the oven. The friends of all six children had the delight of experiencing Ida's baking and warm welcome. She and Hugh were both such a delight, a very complementary couple whose memories will be with me always along with those of all the boys and Kay. A family TV series, the Fulfords, with Ida being the star of the show would have been a uplifting hit. I'm glad my wife and children had the pleasure of meeting Ida, she left a wonderful impression with them as well. Our condolences to the entire Fulford clan. - Posted by: Frank Ooms (Friend of the family) on: Feb 08, 2021

  • Thankyou everyone for your kind, kind words for our mother and our home. It is a treasure when our memories are reinforced by everyone she welcomed into her home. I particularly liked the comment “....every seat was full....”. I often try to describe that scene to my friends. Now I have the words: “Never an empty seat in our home - and if there wasn’t one, there was always the floor...” I truly do remember stepping over bodies to reach the piano because it was time for me to practise :-). Thankyou everyone. You fill my heart Kay - Posted by: Kay Yeo (Fulford) (Daughter) on: Feb 07, 2021

  • Ida led a long life and did many wonderful things for the families who lived near the Fulford’s 9th Avenue home in Swan River. The Leungs were neighbours in Swan River, at Wellman lake and Lindenwood Manor. Our mom was so glad when Ida moved to Winnipeg and became a resident at Lindenwood Manor. They would call each other several times a week to check on each other and chat about their children and grandchildren. We often had supper with mom, dad and Ida when visiting them. One of the great memories of Ida was when she would bake fresh bread and rub butter on top. She would cut Nelson and Kevin thick slices while it was still warm. Between that and her cinnamon buns it was good eats. We would play hide and seek in the basement. Our favourite place to hide was in the laundry chute or behind the furnace. Ida would just shake her head and let us play until the delicious smell of her baking meant that it was time for a snack. Michael remembers watching the curling game and then going to the Fulford house to play cards. There was lots of laughter and good food. Ida loved her large garden in Swan River and continued to plant a small one at Lindenwood. Mom really enjoyed her fresh, tasty tomatoes. Ida was an amazing, warm, loving and kind person who always had a welcoming smile for everyone. We have especially fond memories of Ida who we saw often while visiting our parents who lived at the same assisted living residence. We are sending our love and thinking of you and all the shared and cherished memories of Ida and her family in Swan River and Winnipeg. All of you will miss her, but the family memories will be with you always. • Our condolences to the family. I was part of the neighborhood gang that hung out at the corner of 9th avenue. Played many games at the Fulford resident and yes I enjoyed many a donut as well. Hugh coached our baseball team and umpired many more. Ida always made sure all the neighborhood kids were looked after—a place to stay or a meal or a bandaid for a skinned knee. Her smile and friendly personality made her our favourite second mom. I visited with Ida at Lindenwoods almost every time I visited my parents. It was like old times. Same smile and same friendly personality. It was an honour to know Ida and her family for so many years. I still miss gang from the north end of 9th, 10th, and 11th avenues. It’s always nice when our paths cross at the lake or rodeo. We will miss you. - Posted by: Morley Leung (Family friend and neighbour ) on: Feb 01, 2021

  • I’m so sorry to hear of Ida’s passing. When talking with old Swan River friends, the comment always comes up that we were lucky to grow up in the town that we did but especially in the neighbourhood that we lived in. In large part that was due to the moms of the neighbourhood. Some of the names that come to mind are Ida, Aileen, Helen(s), Bea(s) Beth, and of course Kay to list a few, with Ida being right there at the top of the list. Every seat was full weekly for Sunday night tv as we watched Disney, Bonanza, and Ed Sullivan. Of course there were treats, sometimes the famous butter tarts. Ida’s door was always open to everyone, including ‘Evvie’ as I fondly remember her calling me. I loved your mom. - Posted by: Evan Jones (One of Ida’s neighbourhood kids) on: Jan 31, 2021

  • Ida was a friend as well as a neighborhood Mom. She was a good listener, and had simple reassuring words for any situation one might bring to her. I carry her fondly in my heart, along with the “doughnuts”. I send love and a wish for peace to all of you family /friends. Margaret. - Posted by: Margaret Jones Callahan (Neighbour “kid”.) on: Jan 30, 2021

  • What a great lady! I have a lot of wonderful memories from when we had a house next door where we stayed in town during the week to go to school and then back to the farm on the weekend if the roads were snow plowed. Us "kids" used to walk to school together. Ida always made us feel welcome and special. I know she is going be be greatly missed by her family and friends. • As soon as I saw Ida’s photo, her wonderful laugh came to mind. I lived just down the street as a child and always admired her cheerfulness and how everyone was welcome at the Fulford’s. Hugh was a special fellow too. Such a wonderful family. I'll be thinking of all of you. - Posted by: Doreen Phimister (Friend ) on: Jan 30, 2021

  • My condolences to all the Fulford family. Fond memories of stopping after school and the delicious donuts prepared by Grandpa Pearson. Ida was always very welcoming to all the kids stopping in. A lot of fond memories. Ed - Posted by: Ed Didychuk (Friend) on: Jan 30, 2021
