PRASAD VEERANNA GOWDAR
April 11, 1964 February 21, 2021
He is survived by his wife Margaret (nee Kapinga), children, Matthew and Kiran, parents, G.M. and Pramila Veeranna, brothers, Pradeep (Traci) and Prakash (Michelle), seven nieces and nephews, as well as his cats, K.C. and Vive. His extended family across Canada, India, and The Netherlands, and the many friends he made throughout his life, also mourn his passing.
Prasad was born in Tumkur, India, and came to Canada at the age of seven with his mother and brothers. Here they joined his father, an economics professor, in Kingston, Ontario. He was always an exceptional student and loved playing street hockey and football with his brothers and friends. In 1978, the family moved to Winnipeg. Prasad attended Fort Richmond Collegiate and then the University of Manitoba, where he studied electrical engineering. While working as a student consultant for Apple Canada, he met Margaret and the two were married in August of 1992. Their son Matthew was born in 1997, and their daughter Kiran in 2000. These were incredibly happy times and the family was filled with love.
Prasad began his working career at the University of Manitoba in the Computer Services department where he made lifelong friends. His curiosity and love of learning led to many adventures, including positions with Cultural Research, CAA Manitoba, and Manitoba Digital Health. He had a strong entrepreneurial spirit and helped start several businesses. In all of his work he valued the relationships he formed with his colleagues.
Prasad was deeply connected to nature and understood that all living things are interdependent. In the early 1990s, he joined the environmental movement, campaigning strongly for the causes he believed in. Later in life, he was an active member of the Green Party. His love for plants and animals, and his interest in sustainable living was clear for all to see. Most recently, he collected wild berries for an overwintering robin and was excited to be nurturing several oak seedlings that had unexpectedly sprouted in flower pots.
Prasad had a great passion for soccer. Even in his 50s, he continued to lace up his cleats several nights a week and enjoy the beautiful game. He coached Matthew and Kiran at several community clubs and Sporting Club Mosaic of the Manitoba Major Soccer League. Prasad was a great team player and respected mentor whose enthusiasm was infectious.
Prasad is remembered as a hard-working, good, generous, gregarious, loving person with a keen sense of humour. Family was dear to him and he loved when they were together for special dinners. Prasad connected with everyone he met, always finding a point of common interest. He was a remarkable, uncommonly kind person and will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
There will be a celebration of Prasad's life when restrictions due to Covid are reduced.

Last week my husband brought home cookies from the High Tea Bakery and memories of Prasad came flooding in.. of times he brought me cookies from that bakery, and other kindnesses such as his home made baking. Despite an education in technology, Prasad was truly all about people. He brought a lightness and brightness to the work place in his unique and special way. He will not soon be forgotten. - Posted by: Gillian Brennan (Colleague ) on: Jun 08, 2022

Dear Margaret, Mathew and Kiran, We are very sorry to hear of Prasad's passing. We always enjoyed his company and many stories. He had the best laugh and a smile for everyone. Chloe will fondly remember him as her soccer coach and visiting with him at Sobey's. She always would come home saying "I caught up with Prasad today", how he was so friendly and talking to all the customers and staff around him. Everyone enjoyed Prasad's company. He will be missed. Margaret, Matthew, Kiran, and all of Prasad’s family and friends; I wish to pass on my deepest condolences to all of you, who are missing and grieving for the loss of an incredible human being. Prasad was one of the kindest, most caring, compassionate, loving souls, that I have had the pleasure of knowing in my life. I will miss our stimulating conversations, covering a huge gamut of topics, over the years. Our shared love of nature and the environment, was definitely a passion, that we discussed recently. I will remember him every time I take a bite of the delicious oat and banana breakfast “cookies” that he recommended to me, from his brother’s recipe. I recall, with great fondness, our fun times, playing football and street hockey, together. He was known as the “Wayne Gretzky” of street hockey. His moves were magical to watch. We shared our first drinks together, for his 18 birthday, at Chi Chis, with a pitcher of sangria. We had so many “deep” conversations in high school about life, spirituality, hopes and dreams....such great memories.... Margaret, Kiran and Matthew, please know that Prasad loved you all so much and he always talked about you with such pride and enthusiasm. Blessings to you all. I will miss you my dear friend... - Posted by: Mike McIntyre (Friend) on: Mar 06, 2021

I had the pleasure of getting to know Prasad when he worked across the street from my shop on Pembina Hwy called Pasta and More. He and his fellow co -workers came over for lunch often. He also picked up dinner to take home. He was always a bright light, full of positive energy. The love of his wife and children was evident when we talked. One year we ran the Manitoba Marathon relay together. After I closed my shop in 2005 we lost touch. I do recall last fall he was on the radio or news reporting a lost or found snake. I recognized his voice. Please accept my sincere condolences. - Posted by: Susan Belanger (friend) on: Mar 06, 2021

Dear Marg, Matthew, Kiran and Prasad's family: I'm so very sorry to hear the news, please accept my most heartfelt condolences. Prasad and I met in the late 80s, initially through our work at the UM but then more significantly as we both got our feet wet - and quickly immersed - in environmental activism. I learned so much from Prasad during this time, having never seen then - or ever since - anyone as focused, dedicated and tenacious as Prasad. Always positive and optimistic, Prasad exemplified the ideal team player - unselfishly sharing the spotlight for any successes, taking the blame disproportionately for any missteps. Although I never played with Prasad on the soccer field, I suspect he would have rather made a pin-point pass to a teammate for a goal than score the ball himself! Prasad will forever be one of the brightest stars in my life, his light will continue to shine, guide and inspire us. Marg and family, despite this enormously difficult time, you can rest assured that Prasad's impact on so many of us will forever be remembered and cherished, and his passion for protecting the environment will continue with ever more energy and enthusiasm. Prasad, my dear friend, please coach and cheer us on from the sidelines, may you rest in peace. - Posted by: Dennis Bayomi (Friend and fellow activist) on: Mar 06, 2021

Prasad was one of the kindest students I ever taught. He was very bright, extremely calm, and most enthusiastic about life. Although I only saw him a few times, some years after he graduated, these traits were all still most evident. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: John Fast (High School Chemistry Teacher at Fort Richmond Collegiate) on: Mar 05, 2021

Karie first met Prasad in high school, at FRC and remembers many of Mr Rowan's math classes sitting at the back of the class not far from Prasad. Prasad was always hard working, much better at math than I was (Karie) and just a great person to be around. Our lives inter connected many times after high school, getting re acquainted and meeting Margaret when Stacy presided at Pradeep and Tracey's wedding. We both continued to live in Fort Richmond and our children played community soccer so we were able to chat on the sidelines and occasionally we would meet up at our local grocery store. We are so sad to hear of Prasad's sudden passing and would like to send Margaret and their children, Pradeep, Prakash, and their parents and extended families our sincerest condolences. Prasad was a bright light in this world and we feel honoured to have known him. Love from Karie and Stacy Moroz - Posted by: Karie & Stacy Moroz (Friend) on: Feb 27, 2021

I have known Prasad for about 10 years as a member of a great group of friends that played indoor (and sometimes outdoor) soccer together once or twice a week at U of M or Riverview. He was a great competitor and a joy to play soccer with or against as he played intelligently and with speed and always with regard to his fellow players. He was quick to help organize and balance the teams and always had a smile and a laugh. I enjoyed chatting with him on the bench or after soccer (beer and pizza at Nicolino's) about the game, family, work, really anything that was going on. He was such a genuine and thoughtful person. We will all feel his absence when we get together again to play. My sincere condolences to his family. - Posted by: Cade Arason (Friend) on: Feb 27, 2021

Prasad will always be remembered as the man of great mission, zeal, purpose and goal. He was cheery, friendly and a bright spot in the room. He was brilliant. And an amazing loving husband, provider & best friend to dear Margaret, and his two children were blessed with his love, & amazing legacy to follow. He enriched so many lives and was taken far to soon. We will all miss him. I regret we hadn't kept in better touch over the years. Prayers, love and God's peace to all his family & friends. Especially dear Marg, Matthew & Kiran. You were so loved. Love, Lori , Neil Crouch & family - Posted by: Lori Crouch (friend) on: Feb 26, 2021
