DONALD JAMES KUBARA

While in the hospital on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at age 71 years, Don lost his two year battle with leukemia.
He was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Michael Sr.; sister Judy Szun and brother Michael Wayne Jr.
Don is survived by his youngest brother Richard (Brenda), nephew Paul Szun (Val), brother-in-law Eugene, niece Janelle, his Godchildren; nephew Adam, niece Lisa Danko, close cousin Elaine Kubara, and many other relatives and friends.
Don was raised in the family home that our father built by himself at 1118 Aberdeen Ave., Winnipeg, where he attended Lord Nelson, Andrew Mynarski and Sisler High School. After Grade 11 Don attended Red River Community College to acquire his Electrical / Construction Degree.
His co-workers over the years named him "K-Boss" while working on many big contracts in Winnipeg including the Richardson Building, Fairmont Hotel, Trizec, Royal Bank Centre, the Walmarts, Costcos and Children's Hospital, etc. One of his proudest accomplishments was the electrical construction of the huge Atlantis Hotel Casino Complex on Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas, with his close co-worker and friends, Greg and wife Carol Mazor. While there for several years, he met and chatted with many famous people, including Oprah, Sean Connery, Chuck Norris, Julia Roberts, Yasmine Bleeth, Michael Jordan and many others.
In retirement Don loved spending his summers at our cottage on Big Whiteshell Lake where he enjoyed fishing off his deck at the lakefront, or even more out in his boat with close buddy Allan Melnyk.
Don was aka "The Chicken Man" while supplying bulk chicken strip orders to friends wherever he went. Don was at coffee for 6:00 a.m. most days in Leila Avenue McDonald's with his close friend Gerry Berch and then visiting everyone at Home Depot and Surplus Direct. A big thank you to all of his close friends who appreciated Don's trusting character.
Special thanks to nurses, Tracy, Sherise and Dr. Paulson at CancerCare Manitoba.
You were always a very loving and caring brother to me Don and everyone will especially miss your companionship, humour and generous heart, while remembering all the great times we shared together.

"God Bless Your Soul Don,
you were a very special person"
your loving Brother Richard and Family.

A private family service has been held for Don.

  • My husband Doug and I are saddened to hear about the passing of our friendly next-door neighbour at the cottage. Don was a great conversationalist and entertained us with tales of his life adventures, from high school football - we discovered that we both had gone to Sisler! - to parties in the Bahamas, how his garden was growing and, of course, his much-loved fishing expeditions. My parents were the previous owners of our cottage and had the good fortune to enjoy the company of his father, Michael. It feels like the end of an era. We will miss our dear neighbour and friend. • I was both shocked and saddened to hear of Don's passing as I didn't realize he was sick. I only wish I would have called him all the times I thought about him and thanked him for all the good times we had together. He was a true gentleman, an honest and kind man, and was taken far too early. May he rest in peace knowing that he will be missed. - Posted by: Lorraine Soshycki (Friend) on: Mar 01, 2021
