DOUGLAS STIMPSON
Doug is survived by daughters, Edna, Leslie Gailis (Peter) and Peggy; sons, Ian (Kathy), Joel (Bev) and Michael; grandchildren, Adam (Andera) Stimpson, Shaelynn, Serena, Brock, Calvin, Megan and Eric (Tammy) Gailis. Also left to grieve are his brother Robert; sister Ellen Okolita and many other family members and friends. Doug was predeceased by cherished wife Eugenie; daughter Nancy; three brothers and four sisters.
Born August 1, 1920, in London, England, Doug was the second son and fourth child of George and Mary Stimpson. He came to Winnipeg with his parents and siblings less than a year after his birth. The family lived in St. Vital, where Doug attended Glenlawn Collegiate. Doug enlisted in Canada's navy and served on the destroyer HMCS St. Francis in the Second World War. He and shipmates were made honorary citizens of Athens in 1944 after they returned statesman Georgios Papandreou to Greece. In 2018 he was made a knight in France's Legion of Honour for his part in liberating that country. Post-war work included fur coat manufacturing, soft drink sales and, for many years until his retirement in 1989, owning and operating Western Wholesale Fur Repairs in downtown Winnipeg.
Doug married Eugenie Cinq-Mars in November 1949, and they raised their four daughters and three sons in a house on Humboldt Avenue in St. Vital. He was a kind, generous and dedicated father and grandfather who demonstrated time and again what it means to be a good person.
An avid golfer into his late 80s, Doug played nearly every course in Winnipeg and enjoyed watching golf on TV. Retirement gave him time to play most weekday mornings during golf season, a pastime he enjoyed for many years.
Doug's family thanks the Deer Lodge Centre Tower Four staff for their tremendous work in caring for him in his last years.
No funeral services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to Deer Lodge Centre Foundation.
