VIOLET KOWALKER
(née HOUSTON)
September 15, 1932 - April 17, 2021

Vi passed peacefully in the Grace Hospital.
She leaves to mourn and to cherish her life, daughters, Bev (Gus) and Paula (Alan); son Allan (Sue); sister-in-law Shirley; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grand-children, nieces and nephews.
Vi was predeceased by her husband Len; sister Sybil (George); brother George (Rita); brother-in-law Richard; and daughter-in-law Marylin.
Vi was raised in the North End, and attended St. John's High School. She married Len, raised her family, and worked as office manager of Elmwood Plumbing. She and Len lived for the cottage at Big Whiteshell Lake, and loved every minute they could be there together. After Len passed, she continued to enjoy the lake with her family, 56 years all told. She loved watching the birds. Many card games, political "discussions" and a few drinks were the usual fare.
Vi served as Girls Sports Rep at Melrose Park Community Club and President of River East Ringette. At Saint Stephen's Anglican Church, she was involved in the Altar Guild, Handy Crafters, Treasury and made many friends.
Vi, along with Fran Vannevel, Jean Morris and a core group of ladies, kept the Fuddle Duddle Bridge Club weekly games on for 40 years. These players also volunteered often and were known at United Way as the best volunteers ever.
Cecilia Connelly was a special friend and there was nothing Cec wouldn't do for Mom. She was very fond of dinner with the Widow's Club and really enjoyed her daily chats with Tracy Peacock.
Mom loved her family very much. She told it like it is and taught us all about grammar, the old sayings, right from wrong and fact from fiction. She will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to United Way.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • My heart is truly saddened because of the loss of such a unique, caring and wonderful friend. I will miss our exuberant discussions and nights out where we enjoyed a nice supper, a movie later and to top the evening off a cup of tea and some dessert. My deepest condolences to the family. - Posted by: Virginia Horodyski (Friend) on: Jun 10, 2021

  • So sorry to hear of Vi's passing. Enjoyed the time spent with her at St. Stephen's Anglican. She had a great sense of humour and once you got past her shoot from the hip persona she was a softy at heart. Sorry for the families loss of a great lady and a true original. - Posted by: Ed Clarkson (Friend) on: Apr 30, 2021

  • Sorry for your loss! Thinking of you Bev and Family. My Mom passed away recently, I feel comforted to know she is at peace and free from suffering. I had a pleasure meeting your mom when she comes to volunteer at the United Way. She's very nice lady and I will never forget her. Let perpetual light shine upon her and may she rest in Peace! - Posted by: Daisy Villegas (Friend and co-worker of Bev Passey) on: Apr 28, 2021

  • I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. I teach at Ecole Salisbury Morse Place School, and our breakfast program has been so fortunate to be the recipient of support from the handi-crafters at St. Stephen’s Church. I met your mom in 2019, and was touched by her generosity and her genuine joy at watching our students benefit from the support of the congregation at St. Stephen’s. She seemed to be a very kind woman - my thoughts are with you at this difficult time. - Posted by: Erin Harris (Acquaintance) on: Apr 24, 2021

  • To Vi’s family I send my sincere condolences for your loss. I could tell from our conversations, that Vi loved each and everyone of her family very much. I met Vi at St.Stephens Anglican Church. She was the gal that showed me the ropes for working on the Altar Guild. She was always approachable and always had an answer for my many questions. I’ve enjoyed our many luncheon dates and phone conversations. I will truly miss her feisty spirit! Dawn - Posted by: Dawn Molyneux (Friend ) on: Apr 24, 2021

  • I met Mrs. Kowalker 40 years ago when I joined the ringette sports family and quickly became friends with Paula, who has been my lifelong dear friend. Vi always spoke her truth and was a good, solid person. She accepted what life gave her, being widowed at a younger age as my mom was and continued on with perseverance. She phoned me soon after my mother died in January and spoke such kind words. That was Mrs. Kowalker. Rest In Peace. - Posted by: Kelly McCaskill (Family friend) on: Apr 24, 2021

  • As I got to know Vi, I put in the perspective that is often rare. She was a hard nut to crack and a hard Girl to beat. Love her and will miss her dearly. Great memories will last a very long time. There could be more to say but she could say it all - Posted by: Darryl Knight (Friend) on: Apr 24, 2021
