GRACE JANE KERR

Grace Jane Kerr (Picken) passed away at Concordia Hospital on April 27, 2021.
She is survived by daughter Melodie and favourite son-in-law Barry, as was his introduction to everyone she met. She will be sadly missed by grandchildren, Jade (Debra), Leigh and Nichole; great-grandchildren, Carter, Maddox, Ella, Aubreigh, Theo and Bennett. She was fiercely proud of them and their accomplishments. Very rarely was the day that a soccer, baseball, football, hockey game, or dance recital was missed. Nichole was the benefactor of many special Grandma outings, fine dining at fancy restaurants and many cultural events.
The eldest of six, Grace leaves behind Terry (Kathleen), Rod (Carol), Karen, Mikki and Tim (Susan), many nieces and nephews, and special family member Alice. We are grateful the six were able to be together at Rod and Carol's 60th Wedding Anniversary party in 2019.
Blessed to be part of a very large extended family, Grace always shared her love and fondness of time spent with her grandparents, many aunts and uncles, and lots of cousins at the farm. Lots of wonderful memories of large family gatherings, special occasions, celebrations, always with a bounty of food and fun were cherished. She loved any opportunity to be with her family and dearly loved each and everyone.
Many times over the years, Grace entertained her family in her tiny home on Girdwood (somehow we all squeezed in) complete with a delicious meal and always followed by a game of cards. Many of her friends were included and became our family too. She was lucky to have them and they were lucky to have her.
In her early adult years she joined the Navy. She would say those were the best years of her life. She was an avid curler participating and winning many a bonspiel. As a retiree, she played slo-pitch with the Morse Place Flashbacks, was a participant in the MSOS games, became a member of the Goldeyes fan club. She enjoyed her cribbage evenings at the Legion and kept very busy volunteering for various organizations.
The family would like to thank the staff at Concordia Hospital Urgent Care and N1 North for their care and kindness. We would also like to thank the staff at Irene Baron Eden Centre. The last year has been challenging for everyone, but especially for you as our access to our elders was limited. With much gratitude and appreciation, thank you for giving us peace of mind!
At an appropriate time the family will gather at the Hotel Fort Garry per Grace's wishes.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of your choice per Grace.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Good Bye dear Gracie. The years I met Janet, and I became the only guy with all you Morse Place girls. Wherever you guys went I tagged along for protection, the weddings the ball games, the dances at the Community club. Weiners and beans at the Picken's, the winter hikes. The Christmas suppers you had so we could all get together. You are gone, Janet is gone.. Rest easy Grace you just got to the end first...Bill - Posted by: Bill Dubas (old friend with his wife) on: Aug 19, 2021

  • I first met Grace when we both worked for Manitoba Education and Training during the mid 1970s. Grace always had a smile, greeting and an upbeat word or two to start the day. Never one to support unsubstantiated banter, she was always fun to be with as I remember her very quick wit and occasional verbal shot directed way - always in go fun. - Posted by: Gary R McEwen (C0-worker) on: May 04, 2021

  • Thinking of the entire Picken Clan at this time & remembering your sweet Gracie. While Gracie was the eldest of the Picken Clan, we believe she also held the record as definitely the tiniest of the bunch! Douglas & I remember her as fiesty, sporty & fun... and apparently, the only one in her family that could hum 'Your in the navy now'...& mean it. Who Knew??? When, in Gracie's company, she would burst with smiles & pride over & for her loving daughter, her very favorite, handsome son-in-law plus all her beautiful grandkids. Family time meant so much to Gracie... her uncles with their questionable stories & crazy jokes plus all the aunties with their 'secret' recipes. Yes, our elders get fragile & must leave the planet but we do have all those old photos & memories to sustain us & keep their memory alive. RIP Gracie & our love to the families that will miss her. Sincerely, xo Douglas, Sheila, McGuire, Karver & Kourtney Kaminsky. For the family... "May the stars carry your sadness away, 'May the flowers fill your heart with beauty, ' May hope forever wipe away your tears, 'And, above all, may silence make you strong. by Chief Dan George. - Posted by: Douglas Kaminsky Family (Family friend) on: May 02, 2021

  • I am sad to learn of Gracie’s death. I am so glad to have been at some of those great family gatherings. I consider Gracie to be my god-sister since her parents were my god parents. I remember the stories of my parents staying with the Pickens while waiting for me to be born and how Gracie and/or one of her friends knit a baby gift for me. I also have memories of seeing Gracie at many dances. She was a special lady. God bless you with good memories and peace. - Posted by: Kolleen Karlowsky-Clark (Godsister) on: May 01, 2021
