JAMES DUNCAN MURRAY
September 16, 1947 – May 4, 2021

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dearest James (Jim) Duncan Murray on May 4, 2021, at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, MB, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Jim was born and raised in Winnipeg, MB on September 16, 1947 (73 years).
Jim will be greatly missed by his loving wife Karen, married July 9, 2011, his stepdaughter Amanda (Calvin), grandsons, Braydon and Tyson, his sister Jeannette (Sam), nephew Travis (Melissa), and great-nephew Connal (the lil' guy), as well as countless kind-hearted family and friends.
Jim was predeceased by his father David (1981), niece Amber (1981), and his mother Lena (2004)
Jim grew up and had very fond memories of living on Ellen and Loch streets with many lifelong friendships made from his time there. After his schooling, Jim worked at Sears, Canada Post (11 years) and retired from Canada Customs after 28 years between the Emerson and Winnipeg locations.
Jim had many interests such as playing hockey in his younger years and watching it all on TV, going to garage sales, car shows, lunch with friends, sharing his stories, travel and was a real connoisseur of french fries from local hot spots such as the Half Moon, Mrs. Mike's, Red Top Drive-Inn, Mitzi's, as well as White Top Drive-Inn to name a few favourites. Jim in recent years took up ice fishing, but his greatest recent accomplishment was learning to do home hemodialysis with many thanks and appreciation to staff of the Seven Oaks Dialysis Unit.
Jim was practically famous and loved the saying "you're only human".
At Jim's request, there will be no service but a luncheon will be held in honour of his memory at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre.

  • I am truly at a loss for words. Karen my sincere condolences. I met Jim on his very first day in Emerson. Two hours into our shift four different people knew him. I thought is this guy a celebrity or what. We become good friends and spent many hours together outside work. I had some fantastic times with Jim and he always made me laugh. I met so many of Jim's friends and they sure were from different walks of life. Jim was a fantastic worker and was very proud of his job in the CBSA. He loved life and always had my back as I did his. The training for the Calgary Flames was named Jim Bearcat Murray and I coined that nickname. We have lost a great human. • Our condolences to Karen and Jim's family. Jim made me feel welcome at work every single day. Often it was a loud “Matthew!” as I entered the room. I looked up to Jim, he showed me that it’s possible to be tough and kind at the same time, and that you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other. It’s a gift I will carry with me always. Rest in peace Jim and thanks for looking out for me. - Posted by: Matt Dunk (colleague) on: May 10, 2021

  • I first met Jim when hired CBSA in 1984, it seems like only yesterday, he was slated to work Emerson I in Winkler, MB. Jim had a dog Cimmera and a parrot named Crackers. Jim lived with another friend Claude in a house in Emerson. Many times Claude would teach Jim's parrot new words some to which got Crackers in trouble. Jim told me about his farm animals he had the chicken that would chase the neighbors, the horse that flung him to and fro, and the goat that gave him trouble when cleaning the barn, he would make me laugh for hours. I remember Jim moving to Wpg Crackers being loud and screeching would sound like a infant in distress. Police came over and wanted Jim to show the infant. He had to physically show that it was the parrot making the call for help. Luckily for Jim the Parrot Crackers behaved and told the truth. The are many other stories I can tell, it saddens me to think he is gone, he was a true friend sound board that will be sadly missed. My condolences to Karen, family, and fiends. I left the Post Office after two years and did not see Jim again until we me met when he was selling sporting equipment and sold us some uniforms for our Police baseball team. Later I used to run into Jim at the Palomino Club which was a favourite watering spot for Police Officers. I then had the pleasure to work with Jim and his cohorts from Customs I & I when I was a Sgt. in the Vice Division. Jim was very well liked by everyone who knew and worked with him.
