DORTHEA BETTY COOKE (NICHOLAS)

It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother Dorthea Betty Cooke (Nicholas) peacefully on May 19, 2021 at the age of 86 years.
She was predeceased by her beloved
husband of 51 years Walter Cooke in 2009.
She leaves to mourn her three children, Susan Howell (John), Jim Cooke, Sandra Kasprick (Peter) as well son-in-law David
Howell (Jodi). She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Becky, Stephanie, Will, Perry, Brad, Kyle, and Ryan as well her 10 great- grandchildren.
Dorthea was born in Winnipeg April 23, 1935. After finishing high school she became a registered nurse specializing in pediatrics. On December 14, 1957 she married her sweetheart Walter. She continued to work at the Childrens Hospital until October of 1962 when her second child was born. She spent most of her free time volunteering in her community. Her most devoted activity was volunteering at the Montrose School library for over 30 years.
One of her true joys was spending time with her family. She adored her grand-children and great-grandchildren. In her later years after Walter retired, she and Walter were fortunate to travel. They went on
numerous cruises experiencing many
amazing things and creating wonderful
memories for her to cherish.
Sadly, three years ago dementia crept into her life and eventually she moved into the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg. We would like to thank the amazing staff at the home for their love, care, and compassion they
truly made her final days a peaceful
transition into God's arms.
As per Mom's wishes, she has been
cremated and due to the current restrictions, a memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations, can be made in her name to the Fire Fighters Burn Fund, the Winnipeg Humane Society, or the
Convalescent Home of Winnipeg.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Our heartfelt condolences go out to all of Dorthea's family. We were so blessed to be able to be friends with Dorthea and Walter and I was blessed to be her hairdresser for over 30 years. It was always a pleasure having her and Walter in our home. We always chatted with many laughs and ongoing stories. They were like family to us. She then moved away and I did keep in touch calling her from time to time. Our prayers go out to the family. • You couldn’t grow up on Oxford Street without meeting Mr. & Mrs. Cooke, their three children, their grandma, the dogs and the cats. Theirs was a magical home filled with love, laughter, fun and games. A meeting place and welcoming place and at the centre of it all was Mrs Cooke always willing to feed and extra mouth or two at meal time, always ready with a reassuring smile or a little advice. I have such wonderful memories of time spent with her and her family almost like a second home. It is my great regret that as I grew and became a working mother that my contact with her was reduced to Christmas cards and not face to face contact. My deepest condolences to her family and friends. Dorthea’s is truly a loss that will be felt by many and she will be remembered fondly. - Posted by: Stacy McLoughlin-Pendree (Former Neighbor and friend ) on: Jun 20, 2021

  • Seventy years as neighbours seems to have passed so quickly. The early years when we watched you play your games in the four front yards that were the gathering place for you and many of your pre-school and school year friends. The adults watching all play simple games that included all the friends from both sides of the street, not to forget everyone's friend, Jeep the Black Lab from down the street who played along. So many good memories never to be forgotten. Richard, Donna and I extend to you and your families our deepest condolences for your loss. Allan - Posted by: Allan Haywrd (Neighbour) on: May 29, 2021
