JOHN JEFFREY TOMIUK
passed away from Covid-19 complications. He was predeceased by his twin brother Philip and parents Bill and Olga Tomiuk. He is
survived by his sister Georgia and a
multitude of friends and cousins.
John was born and educated in Winnipeg, studying at the Department of Agriculture, University of Manitoba. John's many
interests included spinning, botany and
working in the family greenhouse business. However, his first love was theatre. He was a forty-seven-year member of The
International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 63, serving as
business agent and vice-president. John was employed for many years at the Manitoba Theatre Centre as the House Stagehand and worked over forty productions at Rainbow Stage. In 2019 John was inducted into the Rainbow Stage Hall of Fame. His professional theatre career started at Rainbow Stage in the summer of 1969, on the production of
Funny Girl.
John, who was known as "The Hawk," was a dedicated and conscientious theatre
practitioner. He shared his skills and years of experience with anyone who wanted to learn. As someone said, "I learned a lot from The Hawk . . . I just didn't know it at the time!" He was a man of great loyalty, integrity and
honesty. He was a friend to many.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a funeral
service will not take place at this time. A
Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a
later date.
If friends so desire, a donation in John's honour may be made to the Manitoba Theatre Centre, 174 Market Avenue Winnipeg,
Manitoba R3B 0P8.
Rest in peace John.

John T. Thinking of you my friend... - Posted by: Barny Haines (Friend) on: Jun 05, 2021

I am sad to hear of John's passing. Sixty-five years ago we were neighbors on Annabella Street. His family lived near the Red River with a large greenhouse. My grandparents were next door at 47 Annabella, and John's aunt and uncle lived on the corner of Annabella and Higgins. His aunt was TV host Martha Stewart's cousin and appeared on Martha's syndicated cooking show. I last remember the twins as teenagers. We all went our separate ways and John's obituary helped renew memories of him and his family and his success in life. - Posted by: NORMAN KENNETH MALAYNEY (a neighbour) on: Jun 05, 2021

We had such fond memories of cousin John from holiday dinners at aunty Eileen's or grandma's Mickoski place to meeting him at Rainbow Stage for the great tickets he would share with his family. Always loved to hear his stories and hear his chuckle laughter. Mom always enjoyed meeting John at Garden City for coffee. Rest in peace John, you will be missed. ❤️ - Posted by: Debbie and Gloria (Cousin) on: Jun 05, 2021
