Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Gary was a big influence on me as a mentor at Knox United Church, the Tuxis and Older Boys Parliament (a mock parliament at the Manitoba Legislature over the Christmas season), and at United College. I remember him well. - Posted by: Allan Miller (Friend) on: Sep 11, 2021

  • Gary Scherbain, I will always remember Gary as a permanent friend and periodic buddy brought together by youth and church activities, university, his role as a member of our wedding party, and the renewal after our friendship after three decades of work abroad. Gary was special in his ability to pick up friends seamlessly after long absences. This is a quality that is especially recognized by people who have made many moves around the world. He and Jennifer included us in gatherings with their circle of interesting people in Winnipeg. We exchanged old photos of our history with the TUXIS and Older Boys Parliament. It is now the Youth Parliament with current leadership by young women. We started as pages delivering messages for the older parliamentarians. Over time, we joined the action. We were elected as delegates from our churches and rose through the ranks. I served as Deputy Premier to Gary’s Premiership. While In University, I remember our debating against each other as Arts vs Theology. The topic was “It’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” Our presentations were hastily improvised, humorous enough to have left the audience laughing and clapping, but irreverent enough for the judge to declare it a tie at - 5 points for each side. I shortly thereafter accompanied him on a weekend trip to Roseau, Minnesota, where he was a visiting Minister and preached a duly serious sermon. We will remember the hospitality of Gary and Jennifer and the warmth of their home as it accommodated friends, family, and mixed groups of people in what we liked to describe as “Canadian” when we were abroad. • Jennifer, Darren & family Our condolences on your loss. He was one of a kind. We were neighbors & friends growing up (We both lived a couple houses away from Robertson Elementary - on Cathedral Ave & Bannerman Ave) After school we had different paths as Gary entered the Clergy and then becoming a Radio Host and unelected Politician before settling in with Art. But we met up again as neighbors in Charleswood as our sons (Darren & Matthew) played hockey together and stayed close friends to this day. He had that smile when he greeted you and would follow that smile up with a question from left field Always unpredictable Our thoughts and prayers are with you. - Posted by: Larry Ring (friend) on: Aug 21, 2021

  • Gary and my dad (Laurie MacKenzie) were great friends so I remember family dinners and outings! I remember going to the office when I was little and Gary always teasing me! I'm so glad I got to see him everytime he came through Sault Ste Marie. My deepest condolences to all of you.
