JOAN RUSSELL
It is with profound sadness, we announce the passing of Joan Russell, loving wife, mother, and sister at the age of 73 on August 23, 2021. Joan passed away peacefully at Health Sciences Centre after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer.
She will be deeply missed by her daughter Jackie (Brad), her sisters, Marilyn (Don), Darlene, brother-in-law Bill (Debbie), and sisters-in-laws, Sharon, Rosalie (Jeff), cousins and many friends. Joan was predeceased by her husband and love of her life, Ron, and her parents, Mary and John Holub.
Joan was born in Winnipeg, MB on June 12, 1948. Joan and Ron met in Prince Albert, SK. Although they were married and resided in Winnipeg, PA always held an incredibly
special place in their hearts. They often returned during the summer months to spend time with Aunt Nancy and Uncle Warren. These trips were filled with memories that were forever treasured.
Joan dedicated many years of service to the Winnipeg School Division, where she worked for over 30 years teaching elementary school. She loved her work, and after her retirement continued to substitute until the fall of 2020. During her journey in Education, she made many lifelong friends who meant the absolute world to her, Roberta (Neil), Ethel, Eleanor (Garry), Gwen, Joy and Jocelyn.
Joan loved her family, friends, oldies music, travelling (particularly to Arizona), Jackie's dog Blue and playing the slots.
A heartfelt thank you to the staff at Health Sciences Centre, in particular the staff on GH6. Special thanks to Dr. Johnson, Dr. Buduhan, Dr. Paul and Dr. Liu.
As per Joan's wishes no funeral service will be held, and cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Joan's name to the Boys and Girls Club of Winnipeg.

I was very saddened to hear of Joan's passing and my sincerest condolences go out to her family. I have fond memories working with Joan at Principal Sparling school as a regular staff member and later running into Joan when we were both substituting teachers. The students loved her. Our heartfelt sympathy to Jackie and Brad in the passing of your mother. Your mom always had a smile and a warm heart in making many friendships. We have known your mom and dad since we were teenagers and through your Aunt Marilyn and Uncle Don we were blessed to be part of many family gatherings at the Mowats. My deepest sympathies to Jackie, and to Joan's family. I was shocked to learn of her passing. Such a wonderful kind person, gifted educator, respected mentor and co-operating teacher. The fun we had working together. the laughter, and learning from you on how to be a teacher. I am very grateful to have known you, to have learned about being an elementary teacher from you. I still often ask myself, "What would Joan would do?". I still use the Spelling Program that she used and copied for me! Tried and true! Rest in peace dear Joan. Dear Jackie, I worked with your Mom at Strathcona School for many years. She was a wonderful lady, full of life and a great smile. My deepest condolences to Jackie, Brad and to all of Joan's family. Joan was a very special lady who was always fun to be with. As a colleague, she was always willing to help and was a good companion at "smoke" break. I will always cherish our coffee dates at McDonald's where we had a lot of laughs.
