  • What a wonderful person we have lost! I admire Ruth's humour, grace and kindness. Though I had the privilege of working with Kris, I had the good fortune to be around Ruth at informal gatherings seeing the affection that 'the Breckmans' had for one another. I am thinking of the family today and know that they will be finding the strength that family affords in this time of grieving. - Posted by: Jack King (friend) on: Oct 31, 2021

  • Shannon, I was very sorry to read that you had lost your mother. My thoughts and wishes are with you and your family at this time. - Posted by: Rowena Fisher (Former business colleague of daughter Shannon) on: Oct 31, 2021

  • I remember Ruth Breckman every time I look at her wonderful painting of Jessica Lake which graces my wall in my home in Victoria. I have always and will continue to treasure it. I also fondly remember the time Ruth recruited my participation in a very funny practical joke on Shannon. I really enjoyed it but I’m not sure Shannon ever wrote another Xmas letter. Ruth’s sense of humour was magnificent. She and Kris raised a wonderful family. She must have been truly proud of each of them and their achievements. My condolences to Kris and all of the family. - Posted by: Nancy Leitch (Friend of Ruth and Kris, and of Shannon and Andy.) on: Oct 30, 2021

  • Thanks Ruth for all the good laughs and conversations through the years. I miss those days they will be in my memories for ever. - Posted by: Glen Rogers (Lake friend ) on: Oct 30, 2021

  • A heartfelt chat with Ruth and Kris changed my life for the better 30 years ago. I so admired them both, and their social activist stance as teachers and humanitarians. When I learned they were attending weekly services at the Unitarian Church, and had guest speakers such as First Nations elders, non profit leaders and other inspiring local luminaries, that clinched it. I now have been a UU for decades, first in Wpg then in Victoria where I live and work now--still in social change. Huge hugs to you, Kris, and to your fine family's loving circle. Ruth spoke her mind, with careful forethought and an underpinning of humour, consistently. Ruth was one of the angels this atheist could believe in! Sending you lots of love from the Best Coast, Marg - Posted by: Marg Rose (friend and UU recruit) on: Oct 30, 2021

  • Mrs. Breckman was my fifth grade teacher 40 years ago. She was the kindest woman and always made each of her students feel special. I still remember when she had her father come and talk to us as well! My condolences to her family. - Posted by: Carolyn Showalter (Former student) on: Oct 30, 2021

  • Mrs Breckman was my absolute favorite teacher from Elementary school. She taught me at Columbus Elementary School. My condolences. She was a wonderful teacher and a gentle nurturing lady. - Posted by: Kim (Bayko) Onagi (Student ) on: Oct 30, 2021

  • May I offer my condolences to this incredible family. She must have been an amazing mother as she certainly raised beautiful children. You were blessed to have been able to call her mum. - Posted by: Jennifer Gibb (friend) on: Oct 30, 2021

  • I came to know Ruth when working out of Kris's basement office. I was very much overpaid as my job always included fringe benefits such as yummy sandwiches at lunch, rum and cokes halfway through the afternoon, and conversations that covered every topic imaginable. I learned so much from those days spent on Robert Service Bay and the example they set always left me inspired to do better, to do more, and to do it all in the same manner: with sunny smiles and cheerful enthusiasm. Ruth loved life! Indeed, her life is something to celebrate. - Posted by: Denice and Joe Girdner (Friends) on: Oct 30, 2021
