KATHI EILEEN JOHNSON
December 21, 1950 October 27, 2021
Kathi was born, raised and schooled in Portage la Prairie. She was married to Frank Johnson for 29 years and resided in Headingley. Together they had one daughter and many family pets. Kathi's one true passion was horses. It started at a young age, riding horses on Sissons' farm, and only grew. She was fortunate to spend 25 years training Thoroughbreds at Assiniboia Downs where she had many personal successes. With time came change. Kathi finished her career working 15 years for the Twomey family at T & T Seeds.
Left to mourn her passing are her daughter Stephanie; son-in-law Jeff; granddaughter Lauren; siblings, Melba Morrey, Patricia Taylor, Colleen Armstrong, and Kelly Armstrong; in-laws, nieces and nephews, cousins, and close friends. KJ, we love you to the moon and back. According to Kathi's wishes, her ashes will rest with her big bay friend Steal the Stretch.
Thank you to all the doctors, nurses and healthcare teams at CancerCare Manitoba. You gave us more time with Kathi. Your professionalism and guidance was appreciated. A very special thank you to Palliative Care, home care and MAiD for being an invaluable resource.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Due to on-going Covid restrictions, a private Celebration of Life will take place. Kathi's family kindly requests her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by visiting her tribute page at EthicalDeathCare.com. A photo-biography, as well as memories and stories published by those who knew her, are available there.

Kathi was the first trainer to introduce us to horse racing, giving us so many exciting moments at the track, especially with Iron Vigors (aka Whitey), who she set a track record with in 1989 and still holds to this day. She was very compassionate with her horses, and all animals, even the barn kitties. That's what we loved about her most. Our deepest condolences to her family. I met Kathi around 1977 at Assiniboia Downs. I worked in the Racing Department for 16 years and got to know her as a trainer. She was very enjoyable to work with and never complained once. You could tell she loved her horses and they were part of the family. When I left the track she became one of my very 1st clients in my investment business. She was a joy to work with and is gone way too soon for those closest to her. Deepest condolences to the family - Posted by: Darrell & Laura Stephansson (Worked together) on: Nov 09, 2021

My sympathy to you Stephanie and Lauren and all the family. I enjoyed getting to know Kathi through you, Stephanie and Lauren. You were so special to her. I also appreciated her friendliness and enjoyment of flowers and gardens at T&T Seeds. - Posted by: Helen Whetter (friend) on: Nov 06, 2021

Ken and I were heartbroken to hear that Kathi had passed. I met Kathi at Great-West Life before she and Frank got married. During our lunch hours she taught me to crochet. I thought I was a crazy animal lover but that girl had me beat hands down. We ended up Co-owning a race horse with her and got to see the inner workings of the track. We also had several of her Manx kittens. Kathi was a beautiful person. We have many wonderful memories and hope that her family will take comfort from theirs during this difficult time. - Posted by: Lorraine and Ken MacLennan (Friends) on: Nov 06, 2021
