GORDON DOUGLAS SAUNDERS
Dad was born on November 22, 1921, at home in Riverview to his mother Rubena and father Charles. Gordon married June Harriet Chamberg on September 12, 1945, following his Naval war service. June passed away January 19, 2021, after having celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.
Gordon leaves his three children, David, Bruce (Yuen), Shelley (Ken); seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Dad served as a signaller on naval corvettes and made many Atlantic convoy crossings while protecting ships resupplying the UK. He had a sharp memory and was able to spin many yarns about encounters with enemy submarines. HMCS Chippawa recruited him and following the war he served there as Reserve Officer. This past Remembrance Day, HMCS Chippawa honoured Dad for his service.
Dad and Mom settled in Charleswood where he served the community as hockey coach, Cub leader and builder of the Charleswood United Church. After managing his own concrete construction company and hardware store he became a manufacturer's agent and travelled extensively throughout the prairies.
Our family was truly fortunate as Dad's father built a cottage at Victoria Beach in 1919. The entire family has spent wonderful times there. His Winnie the Pooh characters were a joy for all children passing the cottage.
The family would like to thank the staff of both home care and the Portsmouth Retirement Living Residence for all the help given Dad over the past five years. Finally, thanks to the Minister and congregation of the Charleswood United Church.

Dear David, Bruce and Shelley, I was so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. I have so many happy memories of him as my "boss". I started working for him at the hardware store the very month I turned sixteen, and spent several years working part time at Saunders Prairie Hardware. I remember lots of fun times swimming, fishing and just fooling around with Bruce and Shelley when we were all much younger. Both Gord and June were very kind to me as a kid, and Gord came to visit Cliff and I after I was married and living in Saskatchewan. He called our town "Pump Handle" Saskatchewan. We met for the last time in the Winnipeg airport when I was flying to Vancouver with my kids to join Cliff in a new adventure. I have the fondest memories of Gord as a kind, gentle man with a great sense of humour and a down to earth view of life. What a wonderful life he has enjoyed and you were so fortunate to have him with you for such a long time. I wish you all much comfort and many wonderful memories to share. - Posted by: Elizabeth (Liz) Roberts (Employee and friend) on: Dec 22, 2021

We were so delighted to have LCdr Saunders join us at HMCS Chippawa this past Remembrance Day. It was an honour to serve him his final tot of rum which he really enjoyed. Our deepest condolences to his family from his fellow sailors at the unit. We thank him for his war service and his support of Chippawa over the many decades that followed. He will be fondly remembered. - Posted by: John Morris (fellow sailor) on: Dec 20, 2021

Gordon's three grandchildren were friends with my three children. He always welcomed my three kids to his cottage at Victoria Beach. That was very kind of him. I'm sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Diane Peters (Family friend) on: Dec 19, 2021

What a wonderful couple Gord and June were. If I was asked who were our favourite clients and friends we worked with, it would have to be them. Carl and I enjoyed many visits over coffee with them. Gord would ride his scooter over for a visit. Just an aside, a signaller served a very important job in the war. They didn’t want the enemy to intercept the conversations so they used flags ‘to Talk’ to other boats. Journey forth Gord and June and thank you for wonderful memories. Sincere condolences to the family. - Posted by: Nancy Lou Ateah (Friend) on: Dec 19, 2021

Dear Shelley, Bruce & David, I am so sorry to hear that Uncle Gord passed away. Despite the distance of miles and passage of time I have precious memories of him still. Remembering his easy chuckle makes me smile. I am very happy for him that he was able to celebrate his 100th birthday with all those who he loved so dearly; quite the legacy. May you find comfort in the love of family and friends this Christmas. Love Bobbie Wildgoose - Posted by: Bobbie Wildgoose (Niece) on: Dec 19, 2021

My father, David Guest, was a lifelong Victoria Beach and Granite Curling Club friend of Gord’s. His face lit up whenever Gord appeared. The two of them shared a lifetime of memories and laughed heartily together. As Dad became more frail, Gordon was a true friend and we all appreciated his visits. - Posted by: Barbara Roche (Daughter of Gordon’s friend) on: Dec 18, 2021
