HELEN LORRAINE SMITH
(nee PORTER)
December 20, 1930 – December 14, 2021

It is with deep sorrow our family announces the passing of our dear Mother, Grandmother (Nanny), Great-Grandmother and Great-Great-Grandmother on December 14, 2021 at Grace Hospital.
Helen is predeceased by her husband Dennis; son Gregory; brother George; infant sister Eleanor and parents, Fred and Ivy Porter.
She will be sadly missed by sons, Michael (Irene), Todd, Brent (Janice) and daughter-in-law Wendy; sister-in-laws, Georgina Amy and Shirley (Les) Szumskyj; grandchildren, Kevin (Sherri), Corey (Melissa), Andrew, Tanya (Sebastian), Tim (Mischa), Daniel and nine great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. And her very special extended family, David Howe, Jody Lynn White, Lynn Ransby, Cheryl Cole, Zee and David Hidlebaugh.
Helen worked at Mitchell-Copp Jewellers for 43 years until the store's closing in 1991. Helen and Dennis were very busy in the years their children were active at the Weston Community Centre, making many wonderful and life-long close friends. They truly enjoyed watching these friends grow and have families of their own. Mom loved crafts and baking and cooking. She was known for her many gifts of knitting through the years.
Our family would like to thank the very special people who brought so much joy to Mom's life. There were many who gave of their time to visit with her, inviting her for meals and taking her to appointments. A special thank you to Myron at My Care Pharmacy, who is the only one she trusted with the care of her medications. And her healthcare team leader Pamela Robertson, whom she could always depend on when she needed help or had concerns. And thanks to Maria and Rose who were there to assist with her daily needs.
Mom always put others before herself and was always there with a helping hand. She was very much a family person, making sure everyone was together for family celebrations. There were many Sunday dinners and cups of tea shared in her kitchen.
A private family service will be held on Monday, December 20, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. The service will be livestreamed. The link is available on Helen's Obituary page at cropo.com. Interment is planned for a later date in 2022.

  • My thoughts are with you and the rest of your family Todd. I have pleasant memories of sitting at your kitchen table at this time of year watching your Mom make her Christmas “snails”.
