DAVID IAN MCKAY

With much love, the family of David Ian McKay announces his passing on December 22, 2021.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife Glenna; daughter Karen and son-in-law Daniel Gimpelj; son Derek and fiancé Lori Trump. Ian was predeceased by his grandmother Mrs. Crosby; his parents; and brother Milton.
Ian was born in Winnipeg on April 3, 1943. He spent his formative years in Flin Flon, MB and beloved Bakers Narrows Provincial Park. Ian graduated from University of Manitoba in 1967. He returned for further studies in 1971.
Ian's career was in wildlife management, with the Manitoba Wildlife Branch. Between 1967 and his retirement in 2003, he served in many different front-line programs in all parts of the province, including establishment of Wildlife Management Areas, monitoring populations, furbearer research, and working with municipalities and farm organizations to minimize wildlife damage to crops and infrastructure. He stood front and centre for wildlife values as diversification of agriculture into elk ranching and wild boar farming posed threats to native species, and he was responsible for captive wildlife issues - which were never short of controversy and where his diplomacy skills were often called upon as policies on falconry, private zoos and import of exotic species were developed. Ian will perhaps be best remembered for his work as Head of the Wildlife Branch's Fur and Human-Wildlife Conflict Unit. To trappers, farmers, and municipal officials across Manitoba, he was a valued friend who understood and always helped them resolve their issues. He was active in national wildlife managers' forums and compiled a distinguished record in developing better ways to serve wildlife and people, including humane trapping programs... his commitment was second to none. At the annual Fur Table in Thompson, where hundreds of trappers from across the North gather to market their furs, it was a first item of business for many of them to seek out Ian to renew friendships and ask his counsel. Throughout his career, his steady dedication, hard work and easygoing sense of humour made many, many friends in the wildlife community who will miss him dearly.
During retirement he was President of the Bakers Narrows Cottage Owners Association for numerous years. Ian loved Vancouver Island and enjoyed golfing with many of his high school friends during the winter months. He especially enjoyed the 19th hole.
Ian loved his family deeply and was extremely proud of his son, daughter, and their choices in partners.
A celebration of Ian's life will be held at a later date.
The family would like to thank everyone for their support and kindness.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 47 Squires Bakers Lane, Markham, Ontario L3P 3G8 or to a charity of one's choice.

  • My husband Nelson and I were so happy to get together with Ian and Glenna at Wellington Pub in Nanaimo for good meals, good conversation and good laughs when they were in Qualicum Beach for several winters before the Co-vid closed all those events down.
