BILL HODGSON
1944 2022
After a brief illness and surrounded by family, Bill Hodgson passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 25, 2022.
William Jeffrey Michael Hodgson was born on June 21, 1944 in Thunder Bay, Ontario to Bebe and Bill Sr. His lifelong interest in playing sports began at an early age and included little league baseball, minor hockey, golf and curling. Bill graduated from Lakehead University in 1965, where he played on the hockey team, was captain of the golf team and was later inducted into the Lakehead University Wall of Fame.
Bill was an avid curler and long-time member of the Granite Curling Club. The highlights of Bill's curling career included a trip to the Brier in 1975 representing Northern Ontario, which resulted in a Canadian Championship and later that year, competing in the Silver Broom World Championships in Scotland.
Bill had a long career in finance and banking, starting at the TD Bank in 1969. In 1999, he retired from TD as Manager, South Winnipeg Commercial Banking Centre and in February of 2000, joined the Cambrian Credit Union, retiring in December 2010 as Vice-President of Commercial Services.
Throughout his life, Bill had a deep love of Northwestern Ontario and fishing and every year during early spring and late fall, you would find him at Raleigh Lake with lifelong friends and family, sharing his enjoyment of fishing with his children, grandsons, Will and James and their father Dann Batenchuk.
Winnipeg summers would be spent at the family cottage in Victoria Beach, where you could always find Bill sitting out on the deck taking in the 'million-dollar view' overlooking Lake Winnipeg. It is there where our annual family golf tournament, the Rusty Pelican, would take place. Throughout his life, Bill was an avid golfer and we are grateful for his patience and determination in teaching us all to play and we will remember him with great affection every time we are back on the Victoria Beach Golf Course.
Bill (affectionately known as "Hodgie") is lovingly remembered by his wife Judy (née Glover); daughters, Kathryn (Jeff Melville), Elizabeth, Susan; son Jeff; cherished grandchildren, Abby, Tom, William and James; devoted sister Barbara (Peter) Duke; niece Lindsay Duke-Grajewski (Jerry and Amelia); nephew David Schoor (Lisa and Christian); his many cousins, including Deborah Thorlakson and Shelley Young of Winnipeg as well as many others who reside outside of Manitoba.
Much appreciation to CancerCare Manitoba, Palliative Care and to Dr. Bruce Martin, a great neighbour and friend to Bill. We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our sister Liz, RNBN and her partner Calvin Pelletier, NP, for their exceptional and compassionate care during Bill's final weeks. We are forever grateful.
A remembrance of Bill's life will be held for family at Victoria Beach this summer.
