DAVID JOHN KEMP
1944 - 2022
On January 5, 2022, Dave Kemp quietly passed away.
Dave was a husband to Lynn for 55 years, father to Jason (Krystal), Janine (Al) and grandfather to Tianna (Marissa), Hayley (Christian), Benjamin, Jackson and Calvin. Dave had a wonderful supportive family near and far and many longtime friends.
Dave had unconditional love for his family and friends. Dave was thoughtful, generous, intelligent, caring, patient, dependable and kind. He was a true gentleman.
Dave enjoyed spending time at the family cottage at LacLu, Ontario. Dave and Lynn spent many good times with family and friends enjoying their 'happy' place. Dave loved to take people on guided tours around the lake in their pontoon boat.
Dave had many interests, the prime one being an ongoing search for and sharing of knowledge and information. He kept friends and family up to date on anything that he thought they would be interested in. He had a keen interest in nature, photography, weather stations, watches and technology. Dave and Lynn spent many hours searching out geocaching sites at home, at the cottage and on their travels. Dave's interest in genealogy took them on many adventures including travel to Scotland to find his family birthplace.
Dave grew up in East Kildonan and attended Miles Mac Collegiate where he met his lifelong partner, Lynn. Dave spent 35 years with Manitoba Telephone System, worked at the Microelectronics Centre at the University of Manitoba and went on to consulting activities in Europe. Dave has served as a Board member of both the Electronics Industry Association of Manitoba and the Canadian Institute of Management. He also served as Chair of the Library Board for the City of Winnipeg Public Library system.
Dave was a volunteer for 59 years with the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers). An IEEE Life Senior Member, Dave held a variety of volunteer positions and served as IEEE Canada President, Region 7 Director, and IEEE Secretary. Dave was also a senior member and Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada.
The Dave Kemp Memorial Fund has been established in association with IEEE Canada in support of aspiring students and professionals. Donations in honour of Dave may be made at https://www.ieeecanadianfoundation.org/EN/davekempmemorial

I just read the sad news about David Kemp. In one simple word, Dave was a gentlemen with a beautiful smile. I met Dave through IEEE Canada some 20 years ago and worked together on many assignments. I called on his help and guidance in 2006 when I became the President of IEEE Canada. He was amazingly devoted to help others and to his IEEE friends. I express my deepest condolences to his entire family and may he rest in peace. - Posted by: Robert( Bob) Hanna (IEEE Colleague) on: Mar 04, 2022

Our IEEE Life Member Affinity Group (LMAG) has lost a great comrade. Throughout his career and to the end of his magnificent life, David served IEEE very well. David was chair of IEEE Canada, Winnipeg section LMAG. Also, he held several key positions within the IEEE organization. We lost a great friend. David will be remembered as one who represented life's greatest values - caring, sharing and always ready to help. He would be deeply missed. On behalf of IEEE and our IEEE LMAG, I want to express our deepest condolences to David's family. - Posted by: Terry Branch (A comrade and true friend of our IEEE Canada LMAG) on: Mar 01, 2022

Dave was a kind, generous person with genuine concern for others. Over many years, we chatted at IEEE Canada meetings, catching up on family and shared interests such as historical sites in Manitoba. A few times, I had the pleasure of visiting with Lynn too, and could see they were a wonderful couple. With me being a team member of IEEE Canada’s magazine for about 20 years, I rarely proofed an issue he didn’t have some part to play in a story being reported on – be it Life Members, history, mentorship or scholarships for students. With students, in his work with the IEEE Canada’s charitable foundation, Dave pored over dozens of grant and scholarship applications each year, giving careful attention to each, and providing supportive feedback to all applicants. On the personal side, when Dave heard of the passing of my mother-in-law, he thoughtfully mailed a hand-written condolence card, which meant a great deal. Dave was truly a gem of a person. - Posted by: Bruce Van Lane, Toronto ((worked with through IEEE Canada)) on: Feb 18, 2022

One of Dave's passions was wristwatches and as such he became a member of Winnipeg Watch Enthusiasts early on in the club's history. Dave came to many of our quarterly meetings over the years and was always had a smile for everyone and showed real interest in seeing other member's timepieces. A classy guy for sure. We will miss his presence at in person meetings once they start up again. Our condolences go out to Lynn and the family for their loss. - Posted by: Rick Gilbert (Co-Founder of Winnipeg Watch Enthusiasts) on: Feb 15, 2022

I met Dave on the first day I attended a regional IEEE meeting; a few months after he completed his term as IEEE Canada President. Dave's generous help in mentoring many volunteers greatly impacted this largest scientific organization in Canada. I enjoyed very much working with him over the years. His emails on different occasions were so kind that I saved a lot of them. Like many friends in IEEE and IEEE Canada, I will miss him very much, and I cannot imagine attending a meeting of this organization without him. My deepest condolences to Dave's family and friends! - Posted by: AMIR AGHDAM (Friend) on: Feb 10, 2022

On behalf of the Southeast & Winnipeg Society (Manitoba Genealogical Society), I would like to offer our condolences to Dave's family. We always enjoyed having Dave at our meetings. Every year I would ask Dave if he would serve on our Executive knowing full well he was too busy to do so. It was a joke between us. We will miss him. Very sorry to hear of Dave's passing, we were both in the first graduating class from the Manitoba Institute of Technology, Dave from Electronics and I from Electrical. There are some people one is drawn to and one connects with immediately and Dave was one of those, open, honest and a great sense of humor. He will be missed, my prayers are with his family and especially Lynn. - Posted by: Walter Weppler (Old Friend) on: Jan 29, 2022

Dave's smile and friendly manner were infectious. He was a wealth of knowledge and was always keen on sharing info related to technology. We always knew when the Kemps were at the cottage when we saw their Canadian flag flopping in the wind. Dave will be sorely missed. Our sincere condolences to Lynn and the family.
