LUIGI D'ABRAMO

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Luigi D'Abramo on February 7, 2022. He died at the age of 82, surrounded by loved ones, after struggling with health issues for several weeks.
Luigi is survived by his wife Maria (Petrillo); children, Emily (Franco), Gino (Summer) and Marianne (Andrew); grandchildren, Luciana (Chris) and Robbie (Miranda); great-grandchildren, Anthony, Teagan and Sophia; brother Nick; sister Angela and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born September 22, 1939, Luigi immigrated to Canada from Campochiaro, Italy on March 29, 1953 in search of a better life. Settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he began working in the restaurant and hospitality industry. Eventually, he met Maria, the love of his life and they married on July 1, 1961. Around this time and after years of hard work, he opened Luigi's Restaurant and Catering on Erin Street which is still in operation to this day. Luigi enjoyed great success over the years in his restaurant and catering business and took great pride in cooking for his customers, family, and friends.
Outside of his work life, Luigi loved vacationing in Mexico each winter, spending time poolside at his home and at the beach with his family. He also had a passion for cigars, cars and boating. In addition, he enjoyed gardening and tending to his ongoing home and yard projects. He spoiled his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren over the years with many outings and family trips that will always hold special memories in their hearts.
Luigi will be greatly missed by his family, as well as customers who could always count on delicious food, a warm smile, and a family atmosphere whenever they would visit his establishment.
A Celebration of Life mass will be held Thursday, February 17, 2022 at Holy Rosary Parish, 510 River Avenue. Viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m. and mass at 11:00 a.m.

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • I have know the D’abramo family since the latter part of 2019. I had an immediate connection with Luigi because I started to see his daughter Marianne. As I am ‘English’ he always called me ‘bloody limey’. I bought him a lighter with a Union Jack on it for Christmas. He tried to get me to smoke a cigar and I was never successful. 2 plus years later, this is a family that I love dearly. They have allowed to me to be part of the family and to this day Maria gives me care packages that I never ask for. They are kind people and they bless my life. I will never forget Luigi as he took me into his home every day. I promised him that I will look after his daughter, Marianne and I will keep my word. A wonderful man and a wonderful family. - Posted by: Andrew yorke (Friend of the family ) on: Mar 07, 2022

  • Maria, Nick, Angela and D’Abramo families. Loosing a loved one is very painful and to this we share your pain. We first met Luigi while living at the D’Abramo residence on Brandon Avenue. On several occasions Luigi’s parents would have family gatherings and always included us. This is how we first met Luigi. He was a hard worker, courageous, likeable and definitely had an opinion! The man who loved his cigars. He absolutely adored Maria and Emily, stating how ‘family came first’. God Bless and Rest in Peace.
