MARIE ANNE BAKER
Marie Anne Baker (nee Woytowich) passed away peacefully February 4, 2022 at Sunnyside Manor in Birtle, Manitoba just four days shy of her 92nd birthday.
Marie was born at home near Horad, Manitoba on February 8, 1930 the oldest of 11 siblings to Philip and Carrie (nee Zurbyk) Woytowich. While she was young her family moved to Elphinstone, Manitoba where she finished grade nine before having to leave to go out and work. She found live-in domestic work cleaning, cooking and caring for local families before moving to Winnipeg to do the same, and worked for Eaton's during their busy seasons.
She met Phil Baker while working in Clear Lake, Manitoba. They were married February 26, 1949 and had 64 wonderful years together before Phil passed away. They shared a love of the outdoors and nature, enjoying fishing, camping and gardening together. Over her lifetime she raised four children, ran a household and had many different jobs: school bus driver, waitress, personal care home aide, store clerk, sewing in a factory, helping with elections and managing a motel for several months to help out friends.
Prior to Phil's retirement they bought an acreage near Ste. Anne, Manitoba where Marie's love of gardening flourished. She had a huge vegetable garden, orchard, and beautiful flower beds. Wherever she lived she always had a vegetable and flower garden, even a small patch at her apartment in Shoal Lake, Manitoba where she moved to after Phil passed away. She loved sharing her produce no matter the size of her garden. From her many life experiences Marie also became an excellent cook giving us wonderful meals to enjoy.
Marie had many talents and her greatest gift was her ability to put any one at ease from a small baby to an elder to anyone in between. She always tried to see the good in people and had such a positive outlook, making us all feel very loved.
Marie is survived by three of her children, Donna (Stan) Yaskiw, Dale (Bonnie) Baker, Ken (Lorena) Baker; siblings, Phylis, Eddie, Caroline, and Louise; grandchildren, Jocelyn, London, Karalee, Krista, Kody, Amber, Anisa, and Darwin, as well as numerous great-grandchildren. Marie was predeceased by her parents; siblings, Walter, Elsie, Ann, Shirley, Iris, and Lynda; eldest daughter Carol and grandson Tate.
A celebration of Marie's life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society, 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.
