NORMA VICTORIA HICKLING
(nee SALMON)

May 24, 1928 – February 13,2022

Peacefully on February 13, 2022, Norma V. Hickling, loving wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma, passed away at the age of 93.
Norma, affectionately known as Sammi by her family and close friends, was predeceased by her loving husband Jim T. Hickling (2015); parents, Roy and Mayme Salmon; brothers, Gordon, Jim, Morley and sister Doris.
Sammi is survived by her three children, Keith (Sam), Kevin (Joanne) and Lori (Greg); nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Sammi was born on May 24, 1928 in Saugeen Township Bruce County, Ontario to Roy and Mayme Salmon, the youngest of five children. Growing up on the family dairy farm, where many happy memories were made. Mom's adventurous side kicked in after graduating from high school. Off to Nursing college in Owen Sound, ON, which lead her to Port Arthur, ON, Calgary, AB and Prince Rupert, BC, where she met a handsome Mountie named Jim. Their courtship lasted for some time as Jim was transferred to Hershel Island, Yukon Territory for two years. Mom decided to go back to the University of Western Ontario, where she received her Victoria Order of Nursing degree. Jim and Sammi married in Sydney, Nova Scotia on October 6, 1956. Mom followed Dad on many adventures throughout the NWT, Yukon and Manitoba, finally settling in Winnipeg.
After retirement, they ventured north again to run a remote wildlife check station in the Mackenzie mountains on the border of the Yukon and NWT on the Canol Road. Seven wonderful and adventurous summers spent with outfitters, pilots, horse wranglers, Dena hunters, grizzly bears and always a faithful dog.
Mom loved to curl, golf, paint, sew, you name it and she would try it, making many friends along the way. Mom and Dad both enjoyed their time with the RCMP Police Veterans' Association, Mom played a role in the book of Memory, which she was immensely proud of. As well as many a Tuesday night with her granddaughters, Alissa and Dana.
We thank the staff at West Park Manor for their love and care of our mom over the last few months as well as the staff at The Wellington where our parents spent their last ten years. Special thank you to her dear friend Ann for her love and friendship.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Fort Whyte Centre or the Winnipeg Humane Society
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
